By Thursday evening a secondary cold front will swing through the area and this will change the wind direction to a more northwesterly orientation. This will serve to bring the lake effect band southward toward the Thruway corridor for a time Thursday Night. Once the band starts its southward progression it looks to stay on the move and synoptic moisture will be decreasing. Still, a quick few inches of snow are *possible* for Southern Oneida County during the night even with a slightly less favorable setup. We’ll have our official Thursday Night snowfall forecast during our morning broadcast.
After the lake snows wind down during the day Friday, seasonably cold weather will take hold for a while with opportunities for (mostly light) snowfalls for many of the next several days. That’s our forecast. Punxsutawney Phil will weigh in on Saturday. In the meantime batten down the hatches, secure any loose objects outdoors and, starting Thursday afternoon, bundle up! As always, the latest forecasts can be found on NewsChannel 2 and the weather page of wktv.com.

As anticipated, cold air continues to spill in from the west, but it will take another couple of hours before the mercury dips below 32 degrees. This is good news, because the delayed drop in temperature helps prevent a widespread ‘flash freeze’.
Temperatures will still fall below freezing this afternoon, creating some slick spots, but only in areas of standing water. Most of this morning’s rain should evaporate or drain before freezing. If anything changes we’ll keep you posted.

ANOTHER QUESTION FOR BILL KARDAS
The night before last, time was 0030 hr. I was in bed and heard strange noises. The wind was blowing wicked. Got out of bed and went to the end of the driveway to check out trash cans. On the way back to the house there was big wet Snowflakes falling with the light rain. The temp. was 51* at the time.
How could this be or do you think I was seeing things????? :-) The temp. was 16* early this morning and we have a total of 1 inch of snow from last night and this morning.

imo- waaaaaay better than WRF.Posted February 3rd at 5:54 PM

Rob (Whitesboro):
Looks like the MM5 keeps keeps the flow at 280/290 for the entire event. This would be a big hit for Utica/Rome.

Jeff H (Sherburne Hills):
Hmmm…for some reason I can not open the snowfall map…..
Posted February 3rd at 6:58 PM

Mel (Westernville):
Yeah 280-290 definitely helps Rome area. 285 is perfect for up this way.

Nick (West Winfield,NY):
BUFKIt, 18z NAM has it stitting a a 290-295 still Monday morning, in to the afternoon before moving back north.

Nick (West Winfield,NY):
Then the inversion falls and dry aloft moves in by Monday night, band gets closer to the lake and weakens, thats 18z NAM bufkit.

MG (Point Rock):
As usual, the WKTV map is more conservative than NWS Binghamton’s. It seems that almost always, the more conservative version verifies. This past Thursday night was an exception, though.
Season total now 100.9”, more than all of last year, and just a little below normal for the date. With the thaws we’ve had, it looks like we’re way below normal.Posted February 3rd at 8:11 PM
