Where are the Dog Days of Summer?

Posted August 13th, 2014 by Jill Reale. 49 comments

With the passing of a cold front today, the stage is set up for a typical Fall-like day both Thursday and Friday. And by Fall like, we mean lake effect rain showers, breezy conditions, mostly cloudy skies and highs only in the mid 60s. Some areas up north may not even get out of the 50s. By tomorrow afternoon, 850mb temperatures drop to +5°, so with Lake Ontario at a temperature of 22°, there is a good change for lake effect rain, especially across the North Country. So how unusual is it to get this cool of weather in August? Over the past 30 years, there have been only 8 years where Utica did not have a high temperature fall below 70° in August! Here is how the 30 years stack up:

Days High Temperature Fell Below 70°

2014
2013: 1
2012: 0
2011: 0
2010: 1
2009: 2
2008: 2
2007: 3
2006: 3
2005: 0
2004: 5
2003: 2
2002: 3
2001: 0
2000: 1
1999: 1
1998: 0
1997: 1
1996: 0
1995: 0
1994: 4
1993: 3
1992: 8 (5 days of less than 70° weather in a row)
1991: 2
1990: 2
1989: 5
1988: 2
1987: 5 (2 were in the 50s)
1986: 5 (1 in the 50s)
1985: 4
1984: 2

The good news is that the cool weather is short lived, we will be back into the 70s this weekend and into the 80s next week. The long range forecast looks to have slightly above normal temperatures for the end of August.

On a side note, as Bill said earlier, the 24 hour rainfall record was broken today in Islip with 13.26” of rain falling. The previous record was set in 2011 during Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene.

Temperatures will be much warmer next week, into the mid to upper 80s by Wednesday and Thursday. That being said, this summer is running 1.0° below normal so while it has been cool, it has not been record breaking. That number will decrease with the warmer temperatures next week.
