Weekend Outlook

Posted June 12th, 2009 by Adam Musyt. 25 comments

Impressive rainfall totals were recorded yesterday with many locations seeing between 2" and 3" of rain in a 36-hour period.  It looks like we'll get a bit of a chance to dry out as we go through the overnight and into the first half of Saturday.  Because of the recent rains, and with near calm winds expected overnight, some locally dense fog is possible into early Saturday.

Saturday will start with some sun (aside from the patchy fog).  But as a wave of low pressure tracks toward New York during the day, we'll see sunshine give way to cloudiness.  Much of the day should be dry, but some rain is a pretty safe bet by evening and into the first part of Saturday Night.  Temperatures should be close to average over the weekend, 70's by day and 50's at night.

The storm system will depart on Sunday and we'll likely see some breaks of sun.  Some lingering instability could lead to a pop-up shower or t-storm Sunday afternoon, so the umbrellas may again come in handy.

The weather pattern looks to stay unsettled into early next week with another in a series of fronts expected to drop in for Monday with the chance for a new round of showers and thunderstorms.  Summer heat and humidity are bound to arrive soon, but it looks like we're going to have to play the waiting game for a little longer.

Rain one day and then again the next. Is this the repeat of 2006?

I hope we get some nice weather for the summer, i’m getting sick of all the rain, althought its doing wonders for the corn fields that i’ve seen so far.

Big Thunderheads just North of here – house just shook.

  7. Rob (Whitesboro):

Yeah there growing to the south of me here too. I had full sunshine for about an hour but not anymore. Good set-up for some hail storms. I noticed a few Warnings for penny hail. I thought they changed it to an inch or better?

Posted June 15th at 2:16 PM

  8. Jill Reale (Utica):

Daytime heating is starting to help storms pop up across the area. Rob: The new warnings are for 1” size hail, the storm in Hamilton Co/Fulton Co was reporting 1” hail at one point. Looks like the best chance for thunderstorms will be north of Utica but as you can see by the radar, an isolated storm cant be ruled out anywhere

  9. Mel (Westernville):

Serious hail now – uploading pics shortly.

Posted June 15th at 2:38 PM

  10. Rob (Whitesboro):

I was just going to ask you. NEXRAD has inch hail up your way. Radar estimates are probably pretty close today with the cold pool of air aloft.

  11. Rob (Whitesboro):

Another thing is that these tops are pretty decent. Some are at 30 thousand feet. Usually these are low topped storms. I hope we get some down this way. Surprised there is no warning with that one.

  12. Mel (Westernville):

E-mailed pics to weather@wktv address. Still getting small hail every now and then but the sun is trying to come back out.

  13. Mel (Westernville):

Just checked the gauge and that storm dumped .60” of rain. Lots of piles of hail where it accumulated in the shady spots off the roof.

had some small hail up this way at about 4pm. didn’t last that long but definatly got a good downpour with that storm. had do shut the computer down because we had a couple of close hits (lightening wise). I’m pretty sure lightening hit a tree somewhere in the yard but i’ve yet to figure that out, but whatever it hit it was too close for comfort.

  16. Jill Reale (Utica):

A few interesting things to point out this morning: This day last year, we had a widespread severe outbreak with 16 severe thunderstorm warnings, many due to hail. Hail reported in Utica of quarter size. Richfield Spring had hail up to ping pong size! Another note, we hit 90 degrees 4 times during the month of June 2008.

Ok, it appears from what I am looking at that it is going to be pretty much an ugly end of the week. The NAM shows that maybe Late friday, and Saturday might be ok. The GFS shows rain pretty much everyday. Any insights as too what at least Saturday might do.

    Deb:
As of right now, it doesn’t look like a washout, just scattered showers. The best chance for rain over the weekend looks to be on Saturday.

  20. Matt:

    Hey Guys,

I was suppose to be going camping this weekend in the Inlet area. Are we looking at more rain the farther north we go of Utica, and it being a complete washout. I heard earlier in the week that this front if it didn’t push north far enough it was going to be wet.

Whats the weather looking like for June 29th through July 5th? Is it too early to tell?

Posted June 17th at 8:54 PM

  22. Rob (Whitesboro):

There’s a ton of severe weather on the map tonight. SPC has 11 watch boxes up and running. Looks like we can get in on the action Friday evening if that warm front lifts a bit further north.

  23. Adam Musyt:

    Matt,

Looks like Saturday will be worse than Sunday, based on the latest run of the WRF. Steadier rain should develop into the afternoon. Sunday’s rains should be more sporadic and we’ll keep our fingers crossed for some breaks of sun.

    Matt S.,

Considering the pattern we’ve been in, it’s tough to say with any sense of certainty what the weather will bring for 4th of July weekend.
