A quick update for this evening. We're still on target to receive a healthy dose of snow across all of Central New York. Latest computer model data is similar to what the earlier models runs have shown. New 18z runs of the NAM and GFS show about 1" of liquid equivalent of precipitation. That's a lot of moisture!
*What is the timeframe we're looking at for the snow?* - We expect snow to overspread the viewing area from southwest to northeast between 1 AM and 4 AM. Snow will become steadier and heavier during the morning hours Wednesday. The steadiest and heaviest snow will be during the daylight hours. By late evening, snow will taper to lighter and more scattered snow showers and flurries.
*How much snow are we looking at?* We expect 8"-12" of snow for much of Central New York, with perhaps lesser amounts on the order of 5"-8" for areas to the south of US Route 20.
*Thoughts and concerns*- The different computer models we use to forecast are trending toward a similar solution. While it's not exactly the same, agreement is much better than what we saw just 24 hours ago. Still, with the storm track expected to be just slightly to our south and east, there is always a concern that warmer air could intrude a few thousand feet above ground level. This would allow the precipitation to mix with or change to sleet at times. The best chance for this to take place would be areas to the south and east of the Mohawk Valley, and that's why we are calling for slightly lower total snow amounts in this area. If the storm tracks a little more to the north than we expect, this area of mixed precipitation will move with it. Similarly, should the storm track a little further to the south, the area of 8"-12" of snow will need to be adjusted accordingly.
Generally speaking, snow to water ratios are 10:1 in temperatures slightly below freezing. We are going to use this baseline to determine our snow for the Mohawk Valley and points northward. With temperatures aloft expected to be on the order of -2 or -3 degrees Celsius, it's going to cut down on the fluff factor with the storm. Had the storm tracked more to the south, that snow to ratio would have been 12:1 or 15:1. We are going to arbitrarily use 7:1 for areas south, with the idea that sleet may hold down totals. This is where our snowfall forecast numbers came from.
All in all, enough to shovel and plow, and enough to cause some travel headaches. Some school delays and closings are *possible* - but we don't like to get too deeply into that. After all, our job is to inform people of what's likely to happen so they can make the best decisions based on the information we give. It's ok to cross your fingers and toes, though kids:-) Mother Nature has woken up from her slumber (or, depending upon your point of view, decided to pick a fight with other areas besides the Tug Hill Plateau). Be careful on the roadways.

Probably just local effects due to cloud cover. Clouds seem to be thickening up now. I don‘t expect much more of a temperature drop. We‘re at 18 at Griffiss now, which is where were were a few hours ago.

I hope the storm totals exceed 12” here in Utica, even though I am probably one of the few.
I also like the possible storm next week. What a winter this would turn out be if we could get back into this every three day “storm” groove. Been a heck of a winter weather season thus far and I hope the remainder of which is one for the record books.
C‘mon Mother Nature lets give CNY a blast for the duration. Mainly just ‘cause, but a part of me would like to make Matt a little jealous!

Jeff H,
Don‘t let that fool you. The storm is in the process of “jumping” across the Appalachains, where it will take a hard turn to the north and east. At this point, I‘m confident you‘re still going to get sleet.

on a side note, I agree with Randy. My wife is a teacher in Utica and I can‘t believe that they have school today, particularly since the catholic schools are closed. Fun in the Wintertime!:
Little Falls SLC: I came into work (Utica) about 6:30. The side roads were wonderful but as soon as I hit 28 and 5S it was a different story. That cruddy salt mixture the state uses is making the roads pretty darn slick and soupy. I would much rather travel side roads any day. A car started sliding right next to me on 5S and just as I got past it they went around in a full circle, so be careful!!!!

local roads:
I agree 100% on the messy state roads. Locals who plow the snow off and drop some sand are much, much better than the soupy state mess. Unfortunately, state plows are dictated more by shift than actual weather conditions. When they come in to work early (like today) they put the salt down. Finally about 9:00 they‘ll try to clear the slop. Again they‘ll put salt down, then hours of snow will mix in and create more slop. I‘ve heard they‘re trying to save money by using less salt, but sure doesnt look it to me. If they really wanted to save money, send the plows out every 2-3 hours and push the snow off the road instead of trying to melt it.

As mentioned, snowfall intensity is determined by visibility. Here’s a breakdown of what the official numbers are:
Light snow >1/2 mile
Moderate snow 1/2 to 1/4 mile
Heavy snow < 1/4 mileIn a situation like this, with small snowflakes, this way of measurement isn’t always ideal (higher visibility with smaller flakes).

Believe me…there‘s no need to panic. It‘s just things are moving a little slower. Once we get the best dynamics over us (in a few hours)...the snow will add up fast and furious. Any type of banding could lead to 2 or even 3“hr rates.

I tried to measure the snow here on Smith Hill, but found it to be impossible. My best estimate is about 3.0”. Blowing and drifting up here is probably one of the worst I‘ve seen this winter. It makes more sense that it‘s already changing to sleet. The radar reflectivities don‘t match with what‘s actually happening. They are way too high. We call this bright banding. Ice pellets (sleet) are very reflective, so when the doppler radar beam hits these pellets, it sends back a strong signal.

I posted at 11:19 with nothing going on here in Little Falls. Well, right around 11:30 or so some snow did start to show up. Not much though. Right now, up here on the hill by the Little Falls Golf course, it is still blowing and I “hear” some sleet hitting my windows from the East. I am now looking at Jolene on the Live shot in Utica and here it looks nothing like Utica. Kind of dry, flurries, windy, small flakes at best and some mix now and then of sleet.

Adam Musyt:
Well, the question mark of yesterday is being answered. The sleet has indeed made it a bit further north than models indicated. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending upon your point of view) that means our forecast totals have to come down a tad.
Curiously enough, it‘s not a “true sleet” here in Rome. Someone above mentioned styrofoam, and that‘s a good description of what‘s going on here in Rome. In sleet, snowflakes melt into raindrops and refreeze back into ice pellets before reaching the ground. I suspect now temperatures are barely above freezing over a thin layer in the midatmosphere that the snowflakes aren‘t totally melting before refreezing.
We certainly knew this one would be interesting. So far 3 3/4 inches of accumulation here in Rome. Bill will pass the baton over to me in an hour or two and I‘ll have more later this afternoon.

Just some final thoughts before I depart for home (and some needed rest!). I think this storm may underperform slightly, but I still think we‘ll hit or get very close to our predicted snowfall forecast. Remember, we give a range to account for days like today. Consider this…we have 3.5” out there right now and all we need would be 4.5” to verify. There‘s still a lot of event to go…everything from the west has to make it‘s way through here. Jeff H,
I certainly hope that I haven‘t personally offend somebody on this site? Telling the “new ones” to go away? Wow… who died and left your Blog Captain? Maybe the comment was geared elsewhere but remember we are all here to post our views and we all have a right to be here!Anyway, pretty much a entire sleet event here now. Wind seems to have died down a tiny bit but still going strong. No major snow for sure but lots of blowing. Temp is steady at 25 degrees and drifts with new sleet crusts should be interesting as far as plowing and shoveling! When the wind quiets for a minute it is actually pretty nice looking out there. Up here on the hill in Little Falls we didn‘t get much in “accumalations”. (at least as far as I can see since the wind is really wrecking havoc on seeing it piling up)!
Happy snow blowing everyone!!! :-)

Thanks newbie! Jeff H really needs to grow some thicker skin if he wants a lead role on the wishcasting team. Not sure if I‘m quite ready to go away yet, sorry. In fact, his directive may have a counter-productive effect. Telling people to go away from an anonymous blog is more likely to attract “undesirables”.
I see forecast now changed to 6”-10”. Is that storm total or rest of the day? Has to be total, think we‘ll be luck to reach 6”.

Moderate to heavy snow the entire way into work from Rome to Utica on Route 49. Roadways are getting quite slick.
Primary low is still back across the PA/OH border. We still expect a transfer of energy to a new low pressure just offshore around sunset. While there is a lull in the precipitation from Syracuse to Auburn and down to Williamsport, it also appears that more precipitation is filling in across Central Pennsylvania.
We‘re up to about 4 1/2 inches of snow, so the call of 6-10 is going to stand, and that runs through 11 PM.
Thanks a million to everyone. Every little bit of information is a lot of help, especially with marginal events like this one.

New area of low pressure just beginning now to organize around Philadelphia. Primary low has a minimum pressure of 998 mb while the new low is still at 1005 mb (the lower the pressure value the stronger the “low pressure” center).
So the new low will gradually take over, and as it does, our precipitation will turn more and more to snow instead of a mix.

Looking at some of the observations within the next batch of precipitation (to the west of the dry slot), I like what I see. Half-mile visibility with moderate snow in Rochester, and quarter-mile visibility and more heavy snow for Buffalo and Bradford and DuBois, PA.

Well it looks like the sleet event is over here. About 1 hour ago I finally saw big fluffy flakes for the first time all day. My bird feeders are barely swinging now as the wind has died down significantly. For the time being anyways. The plow just came by and mostly knocked down the drifts across the roads. Wind still coming from the East here and it is coming down lightly for now. Temp. has rose to 29.5 and every once and a while I hear the sleet come and go.

Becky,
Yeah. It should. The dry slot itself is filling in now and it‘s snowing impressively to the west.
I think another 2”-4” on top of what we have already seen seems to be a fair call. We‘re closing in on 5” now, so that should take us to our 6”-10” forecast.

If I could make one observation, seems like a few of the regulars really take offense if anyone gets “challenged”. Think it comes with the territory if your going to stick your neck out and make a prediction. What if meteorologists got mad everytime they got second-guessed? Food for thought.

Obviously, when you have all three jets phased with a strong S/W riding along them, with all those dynamics you get a bomb. When the storm bombs, it closes off at all levels, even 500MB and above. This closing off of the low flexes the ridge over the northwest Atlantic, the storm has no where to go, the trough goes negative, and we have a huge cut off low That is what some1 from the other blog thinks of the 18z gfs..

GFS has been advertising a mean looking storm for early next week. Yesterday‘s 00z run showed what looked like a blizzard as the storm rapidly intensified off the coast. 12z run this morning showed, as is typical for this year, a more inland track. If we were to take the 12z run verbatim we‘d actually be looking at a rainstorm here. Obviously to go from a big blizzard to a rainstorm shows that nothing is anywhere near etched in stone. It‘s going to be interesting to watch and we‘ll definitely tackle it as we get closer.
Before all that there may be a touch of lake effect tomorrow morning, on the order of 1”-2” for most of Oneida County with perhaps a tad more in the more persistent. Whatever does develop will lift northward tomorrow afternoon as winds veer ahead of Friday‘s cold front.
I can‘t stress enough how thankful we all are here in the weather center for the reports. You are our eyes all across the viewing area. And on days like today with such differing conditions over short distances, it‘s even more important to get as much information as possible.

Thanks. It would be much appreciated.
On the Lake Effect, if it can organize this evening, the best window of opportunity to rack of extra snowfall would be from now through about midmorning tomorrow. After that, whatever is left of the band should be on the move as steering currents direct in northward in response to the next cold front that is slated to arrive on Friday.

Matt in Marcy, A 290 flow would be good for Utica , Marcy etc, A 295 flow would be good for Paris Hill area and New Hartford, 300 flow would be good for West Winfield , Oneida etc. all depends how many bands of lake snow.

A “270 flow” just means that winds are coming from 270 degrees on a compass, or from due west. When the wind is on a 270 flow, the lake effect forms to the east of Lake Ontario, and depositis snow band over the North Country. A 290-flow is good for the Mohawk Valley. A 300 flow favors the hillier terrain to the south of the Valley, and anything over a 300-flow pushes the snow band further and further west toward Syracuse and Auburn.
Right now the lake effect that is starting to form is on 300-degree wind flow and a band of lake effect snow is just starting to form Fulton to Brewerton to Chittenango and then to areas south of Oneida.

I don‘t know when the synoptic snow transitioned to lake effect, but I got 5 more inches after 7:30 PM , and still had good snow falling at 7:30 AM when I left for work (visibility was 1/2 mile). My storm total was 11.5 at that point. I noticed on the cocorahs web site that the observer in Stokes Corners was reporting 13.5 for a storm total. My water equivalent was 0.77, but the ratio changed dramatically from about 9 to one at the beginning to almost 50 to one for what fell overnight.

Abner: We are going to get hit by something for sure. The question now becomes what? It could be a massive rain storm with severe flooding or a crippling snowstorm with a ton of snow….. oh and of course there is always the chance of our favorite, a crippling ice storm as well. This system will be tapping moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, and models are spitting out widespread heavy qpf, so whatever it comes as it appears at this point to have a significant impact any way you slice it.

mike m(Oswego):
tuesdays storm is going to be a different “breed” so to speak then what we have seen so far this winter. ok so lets set the situation and see what may happen. first off we will not have too much cold air in place with 850 mb temps > -10 degrees. a large piece of energy will ride across the SW US and emerge into the GOM. as it does so it will begin to strength, and due to a strong trough to its west, which will eventually go negatively tilted, and also high pressure to the storms east , the storm should turn north somewhere along the coast. this is where the details come in. if this storm takes a track in land say just west of DC and then near Binghamton, we will see a sloppy mess with snow going to rain then back to some light snow. or the storm may track from near norfolk va, to near NYC the possible near albany, this would be the favored track for heavy snow across CNY. then there is stil the chance that the storm tracks offshore to near montauk pt long island the near or just east of boston; even this would probably still bring us some light snow(<6”). now on to why this storm is so different. if everything turns out right this storm will be very powerful over cny, no matter what the track. this storm is going to begin to cutoff over near our lattitude. this means a very slow moving storm with strong dynamics, this will cause banded precipitaion, and a strong deformation zone may form over CNY. well all there is to do now is to wait and see….

Rob (Whitesboro):
Mike if this thing tracks to our west flooding is going to be a major concern. The snowpack here is 20” deep and probably twice that to my north. I would definitely root for a more eastern track. Check out the UK model. We would have to go out and board up our windows for that!
Posted January 29th at 10:16 AM
-
mike m(oswego):
rob, even though we could deffinetly get alot of rain out of this if it tracks to our west, im not sure about flooding. with so much snow on the ground, perhaps the snowpack would absorb most of the rain. im sure there would be some minor flooding, but i dont think we go above freezing long(if at all) and then expect a hard refreeze. this is all assuming a track over or west of us of course.

Rob (Whitesboro):
Yeah that‘s true it‘s been so cold around here things probably wouldn‘t get out of hand. And like you said things would freeze up in a hurry with that arctic airmass it would drag in. The lake will be gushing somewheres. Speaking about the lake, we got a decent set-up tomorrow night.

Snowblowed the driveway around 2:30am this morning. Snow was coming down still at a pretty good clip, i was quite surprised. I estimate we picked up 8” or so. The wind blew the snow around a lot so it truely is hard to get an dead on accurate measurement….

Michael – post 386. Thanks for your insight. I hate when we hype up storms so far in advance and then they fizzle out. Looks like this one definitely will do something to us….unless it goes out to sea of course. (AKA : “a fizzle out”)
Bob Jones: post 387. Thanks, but I‘m not so sure Musyt and Kardas appreciate it as much as you do. Bill put the hammer down on me earlier this week on one of my posts. I appreciate that some of us take this seriously (way too seriously) but I try to at least bring a little humor to the table. Jim S.:
Bill,
Can I suggest adding Lapland Lake‘s snow total reports to your regular post mortem list, or is inclusion on that list reserved for observations that meet certain minimum data collection criteria (ie, snow board use, a certain number of different measurement locations, &c.)?
LL‘s location in the town of Benson in Hamilton County is no further away from Utica than some of the other snow totals that are provided regularly on your website. They got 12” from this storm, by the way.
Also, have you stopped using the official spotter reports on the NWS websites to fill out the totals list? I seem to remember your team providing that data previously… Most of the reporting coop stations for NWS Albany in Herkimer (eg, Little Falls) Hamilton (eg, Piseco) and Fulton counties (eg, Peck Lake) would still be considered part of WKTV‘s viewing area, I would think. Their inclusion might help WKTV‘s blog become even more of a “must visit” for us winter weather nuts! Regardless, it is still an invaluable resource for Central NY weather and much appreciated.

Becky (West Leyden):
I hope the Groundhog enjoys the 2nd because the storm for Tuesday and Wednesday has the potential to be a monster. The models are split on the track, the GFS has the storm past to our east. The Euro and Canadian favor a western setup. The way I see it there are three possible tracks 1) the system comes into the Great Lakes, 2) the system runs along the Appalachians, and 3) the system becomes a costal. Possibility The first scenario would keep us on the eastern side. Because of this CNY would see a lot of rain. With all the snow I think we would see at least minor flooding. The second would bring a lot of snow…The second possibility could cause blizzard conditions in some areas. The third scenario drops less snow north and west of the M.V. However the south and east could get buried (especially the Catskills). I don’t like the setup for this storm…. It will be similar to the 1993 storm of the century. That storm also formed over the warm water of the Gulf of Mexico. Because it was able to tap into all that warm moisture; it raised havoc with the entire East Coast. I’m not saying this storm will be as bad as the 1993 storm. However the potential is there. This system will also have a lot of wind with it. No matter which track it takes this one will have to be watched closely.

Michael- (Dolgeville):
Just took a look at 3hr Flash Flood Guidance. It would take 2.50” inches of rain in less than three hours to trigger Flash Flooding for the valley. For the Adirondacks its running 3.50” inches.
Biggest threat in my opinion if a warmer scenario played out would be widespread ice jam flooding/ poor drainage flooding along with possible roof failures due to increased weight from the rain. In either scenario GET YOUR ROOFS SHOVELED!!!
If a colder scenario occurs you still end up with big problems, but we can always deal with the snow. Just looking at barometric pressure readings off the models, this storm could rival the V-DAY 2007 blizzard and comes close to the ‘93 monster. Again, I am ONLY just refering to strength from a pressure standpoint.
Again we are talking about a system that is 4-5 days out, so a ton of changes WILL occur between now and then. Either way there is the potential for something very big to occur next week, and I stress potential, so stay tuned!

12Z Euro trended a little further east with the storm. This would bring a wintry mix more than a heavy rain. This set-up would be prime for significant lake snows.

Development is the key to the Tue/Wed storm. The longer it take to develop the further east it will track. If its in the GOM early in its development…. LOOK OUT

Your welcome Amy. Some of these snowbanks around here are starting to rival the Feb 2007 banks. The snowpack isn‘t as deep (yet) but it‘s been so cold nothing really got a chance to melt. Seasonal total here is 86.5” with a 20” snowpack.

To give a comparison The superstorm of march 93 had its lowest pressure reading on 14 March at 0000 UTC.... the reading was 960 mb. Therefore, this system has the potential to at least rival that monster.
