Time to Defrost

Last night was the second coldest night this year (-13 on Jan 10th). If the wind was calm, temperatures would have dropped even further. Here is a look are area overnight lows:

Watertown -24°
Glenmore -22°
Old Forge -22°
West Leyden -21°
West Winfield -20°
Woodgate/Boonville -19°
Holland Patent -19°
Point Rock -18°
Cedarville -17°
Gray Reservoir -17°
Deansboro -16°
Sherburne Hills -15°
Oriskany Falls -14°
Westdale -14°
Westmoreland -13°
Fairfield -13°
Steuben -12°
Whitesboro -11°
New Hartford -10°
Rome -9°
Herkimer -6°

So what is next? The week ahead looks relatively quiet and seasonable but there will be a few bumps in the road starting with tomorrow. Sunday will feature lake effect snow as well as a weak cold front. Lake effect snow will begin to develop Sunday morning as winds turn WSW out head of the cold front. Lake effect snow will develop in Southern Lewis County during the morning and early afternoon before the wind turns SW, shifting the band into Northern Lewis County during the afternoon. Snowfall amounts across the North Country don't look to impressive (a general 3"-6") due to wind shear aloft.  While we wont see any snow from a SW wind, we will see "milder" air by Sunday afternoon. By mild, I mean temperatures in the low 20s.  The actual cold front looks to drop in Sunday night (after 7-8pm) with a burst of widespread snow. The snow will be short lived as the front passes (little to no accumulation). Behind the front, winds shift once again to the NW, dropping the lake effect snow into Madison, Chenango and Otsego Counties Sunday night into early Monday.

Another weak disturbance passes on Tuesday with light snow showers. Behind the weak disturbance, high pressure moves back in for Wed-Fri with plenty of sunshine and seasonable temperatures. We are keeping an eye on yet another weekend storm that looks to be a southern runner. The GFS keeps the storm way to our south, while the Euro is trying to push it a little bit north (PA/Southern Tier with light snow). We will keep an eye on the storm all week long.

We had__-4*__here this morning. At some point after midnight it was__-9*__. It must be starting to warm up a little.

I always try and check the high and low temps in the Utica OD. I notice this morning it says the record low was__-26*__ in 1948.

Justin, the GFS I am looking at, shows the storm going out to sea at the state of Virginia.

  13. Scott (HP):

OUT TO SEA???? You don’t say. Can see grass in my yard and it’s the last day of January. Lived here since the early 80“s and don’t recall ever seeing that. Rediculous

Well the Euro model certainly doesn’t solve anything. Last night it had a major storm right over BGM. Now it’s about 1000 miles to the SW of that. We got a ways to go with this one.

When will this LES band start to head a little further south to the southern tug region??

Posted January 31st at 3:42 PM

  19. Becky (West Leyden):

Justin, Later this evening. However, it will not be bringing a lot of snow for the valley

I saw a story by Holly Ramer, Associated Press Writer, about New Hampshire’s Mount Washington losing its distinction as the site of the fastest wind gust ever recorded on Earth. she said a 253 mph gust on Australia’s Barrow Island has beat the 231 mph record set atop Mount Washington on April 12, 1934.

  20. Justin (Whitesboro):

Becky: Yea i am not worried about it coming to the valley, the trails need the snow for riding…

Lots of snow up on the Tug now. Last week at this time the Worth cam showed 6”. It’s up to 3 feet now with heavy snow falling.

  23. MG(Point Rock):

Jill, I’m amazed that Utica has over 25 “ of snow for January. Up here on the edge of the Tug Hill, I’ve only got 21.5” for the month. My average for January, over the last 25 years, is 51”.

Posted January 31st at 6:58 PM

  24. Rob (Whitesboro):

That lake band is intense up there. 16” already in Adams just south of watertown.

  25. Mike S (Port Leyden):

That band was nasty when I came back from Ft. Drum around 3. Couldn’t see the car 50ft ahead of me.

Can’t imagine how it is now…

Posted January 31st at 9:44 PM

  29. Justin (Whitesboro):

Jill: Where do you expect the band to be after the front passes?

Posted January 31st at 9:55 PM

  30. Becky (West Leyden):

At this time we’re getting heavy LES. estimate the rate is two to three inches per hour. As of 11:00 pm we had 2.3/4 inches for the day which brings our seasonal total to 105.775 inches At the rate it’s falling we will have several more inches by morning.

  31. Stacy(Stratford):

Seems the band has shifted further southeast than was anticipated. Snowing very heavily here! I sure hope the kiddos will have school in the morning….

Posted February 1st at 1:50 AM

  32. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

Morning gang, The bands have wobbled to the south this morning as that cold front crosses the area. Things appear to be on track this morning, as that band is expected to shift south of or near the Thruway this morning. The band will then work back north as winds align back into the west. Many areas will pick up a burst of snow, with a couple of inches possible. Though the snow may fall heavy at times, we don’t anticipate this to last all day for most areas.

  33. Rob (Whitesboro):

Getting moderate snow right now. Looks like about 2” so far. I’ll have a measurment later.

  37. Remsen:

    About 2” Remsen-Barneveld area overnight.
Very intense, narrow band around 7AM along Rt. 12 from So. Trenton to top of Deerfield hill. Easily 2”/hour if it persisted.
Not real impressive on radar though, must be one of those cases where radar overshoots the snow?

Posted February 1st at 7:53 AM

  38. MG(Point Rock):

Mostly clear sky at 11PM, clear again by 7AM, but 4.0 inches of snow sometime in between. Season total 79.5”
