Thunderstorms...

Wet weather returns for parts of the area today and tomorrow...

Good morning Central New York and TGIF!  It's been a hot stretch of weather, but the next two weawther systems will help bring down the high levels of humidity.  Thunderstorms will arrive today late this morning and early this afternoon, with most of them leaving by 5-6PM.  There's a small chance for severe weather today, with our main concern being gusty winds.  Heavy rain is possible in some of these thunderstorms due to the high amounts of humidity in the air.

There are many different types of thunderstorms: air mass storms, pulsers, supercells, and squall lines just to name a few.  Each type of thunderstorm produces different types of weather.  In order to figure out what kind of storm will develop today we have to look at the forecast sounding.

There are two types of wind shear: directional shear and speed shear.  Directional shear is when winds that change direction with height.  Speed shear is when winds change speed with height.  Directional shear aids in the rotation of thunderstorms.  Speed shear helps separate the updraft from the downdraft.  You need both in order to produce rotating thunderstorms.

Take a look at this map.  This is called a hodograph.  It is a diagram that represents wind speeds in the atmosphere.  The yellow lines represent winds from the surface to 3km.  The lines go in the same direction (they look straight), which means the winds aren't changing direction with height.  The lines branching away from the center means that winds are getting stronger with height (speed shear).

Today's sounding show little directional shear, with ample amounts of speed shear.  We call this 'unidirectional shear'.  In this kind of situation, we look for multi-celled thunderstorms.  Multi-celled storms mainly produce wind and sometimes small hail.  The temperature profile looks too warm for any significant hail to form today, so winds look to be the main concern.

It's possible, if the right ingredients coming together (jet stream influence, etc), that a squall line could develop along the front this afternoon.  If this does happen, it will likely develop either over or to the east of Central New York....meaning we'll have very little lead time on the situation.  It's difficult to pinpoint exactly where and when this will happen.

There's the chance for more storms tomorrow, as another disturbance passes through the area.  We'll keep you updated with all the latest developments for today and tomorrow's storms as we head throughout the afternoon.

Well we got 3 chances out of 5 days for storms. We gotta get something out of this. Just some heavy rain would be nice.
Here’s a report from USGS on the earth quake. Is there even a fault down there?

Bill, thanks for giving the Alex. Bay and Sacketts Harbor temperatures. A lot of people vacation up in that area as well as the Adirondacks, so it’s nice to see them covered on your early morning TV wx segments.

Interestingly this morning, I left for work before 6 and the temperature on my car thermometer was 69 degrees. When I got to Syracuse, it was 79! Sort of goes hand in hand with what your last blog was about. I always notice it warmer out this way. Looks quite dark here to the west at the moment. Radar confirms some showers to the northwest of Syracuse now.

    Rob,

The New Madrid Fault line runs along the NY/Canadian border southwest to and down the Mississippi River Valley. This earthquake was too far away from that fault line. The Brevard Fault line runs through Georgia. I can’t seem to find any information about if this one extends northeast enough to impact DC…but there’s gotta be something there to produce a 3.6. Either it’s a little known fault line or it’s now going to be a newly discovered one.

Looks like a line of heavy precip is forming quite well out to the west. Just getting to Syracuse now.

Would that line passing Syracuse be considered our squall line? If not, what would define a squall line – severity?

Posted July 16th at 9:06 AM

  7. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

    Working,

Squall lines are based on intensity. The radar would show a line of red right across the line. I see many cells in this one, but nothing all that strong. This line moving through now likely won’t produce severe weather…too early in the day and not enough instability in the atmosphere.

  8. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

I’m surprised this line got going so early. I’m thinking this thing may come in waves, with the first one happening now. The front is still well to the west.

Looking at the winds & radar pattern, I think the lake breeze helped pop these storms early.

  12. Mel:

Well that first line gave us a good steady rain for a while – few rumbles/cracks of thunder – then 15 minutes of heavy rain – I lost the Sat TV signal just before it started and still don;t have it back. Looks like a little training going on. Have to check the rain gauge when I get a chance.

  15. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

This line continues to get stronger, but is still below severe limits. Some good soaking rains will move through from the valley north over the next few hours. The storngest part of the line is now crossing through Rome.

Posted July 16th at 10:19 AM

  16. Working in Utica:

Thanks, Bill. So I assume that a squall line would be defined as a severe line of t-storms. Nothing severe with this line. Just much needed rains. Where about is the cold front? I see a line of storms popping up near Rochester. Is that our front?

Posted July 16th at 10:20 AM

  17. Mel (Westernville):

Well a little break in the action – picked up .72” with that first line.

Posted July 16th at 10:52 AM

  18. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

    Working,

That’s where the front is right now…near Rochester. This line advancing through the area right now is not doing too well…losing strength. I have a feeling the atmosphere jumped the gun on this one. We’ll see how things play out over the next few hours to see if there will be another line forming.

Not a drop of rain has fallen south of route 20 today. Just wondering if things are going to stay north of 20 or if we all will get in on the action later? We really need the rain .

Posted July 16th at 11:39 AM

  24. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

Any areas that saw rain already today are pretty much off the table for severe weather this afternoon. The storms robbed the energy out of the atmosphere. There’s a lot of energy south of rt 20 this early afternoon thanks to morning sunshine. This area still has the potential for a strong storm or two…but so far things don’t look great on the radar (nothing has fired up yet).

Sara, This is the way I see it. The severe treat will depend on where you’re at. For the Thruway and points south there might be a few showers and thunderstorms, at this time, they don’t look like the will be strong to severe. A line of storms could form somewhere between Rochester and Syracuse tomorrow afternoon, If they form and stay together It’s possible the Mohawk Valley could see a few strong cells. At this time northern NY has the best chance for seeing strong to severe weather. the temps and dewpoint along with a fairly decent CAPE look favorable for strong thunderstorms.

fairfield, How much rain did you end up with?

Becky, we got a whopping .14 yesterday, while refreshing, still dissapointing

Posted July 17th at 8:15 AM

  42. Rob (Whitesboro):

Instability is rather impressive ahead of the front currently. CAPE is 2000-2500 across western and CNY. This is about the highest we’ve had all year.

Posted July 17th at 12:40 PM

  43. Becky (West Leyden):

conditions are ripe over parts of Minnesota and Iowa today for a decent tornado outbreak, these will be large wedge a few should be EF4’s-EF5’s. the storm chasers will be all over these storms later today.

Rob, CAPES do look decent for later this afternoon and. we will have a few triggers this afternoon. (after 3-4 pm) that could get things going. However don’t forget that the sounding show a layer of warm air aloft. This will probably keep things from getting out of hand. However, a few storms could reach strong too severe levels. I still think northern NY has the best chance of seeing thunderstorms. the big concern for this afternoon will be the possibility of strong winds from any thunderstorms that do develop.

fairfield, hopefully you get more rain today. If not Sunday night and Monday morning are looking good for storms. There will also be a warm front later in the week that will bring the possibility of rain as well. I think your ground moisture problem will be a lot better by next weekend.

Said there was no way to continue east on 29 and that we would have to turn around. Said it was a “complete disaster” with almost every road blocked with downed trees. Decided to head to St. Johnsville instead. The lightning to the south was incredible! Here in town when the storm came through around 7p.m. I estimated winds around 55 mph. Not alot of thunder or lightning but the wind was the most intense I’ve seen in a few years. I only spotted one large tree down in a yard but storm reports say there are numerous trees down. We did loose power for a few seconds too.
