The Heat Is On!

Summery conditions have returned to Central New York.  After yesterday’s stormy weather, a strong ridge of high pressure gained control of our weather today.  Hazy sunshine and a high temperature of 85 degrees made for July-like conditions.  The Bermuda High and the wind flow around it will only make for warmer conditions during the day Friday.  Temperatures at the 850 mbar pressure level are expected to climb to around 18 degrees Celsius.  Given several hours of hazy sunshine, this should translate to temperatures near 90 degrees in lower elevations for daytime highs, provided that the cloud cover stays away.

While the majority of Friday should remain rain-free for a majority of the area we can’t rule out a brief shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon.  The best chance for this to occur would be over the higher terrain or in the proximity of any lake breeze boundaries that develop.

A cold front will be moving closer to our area from the Upper Midwest on Saturday.  This combined with the heat and humidity and increasing shear could allow for the development of a few stronger thunderstorms.  The majority of the day likely won’t feature rainfall but we’ll be sure to keep an eye to the sky…and the radar as any scattered storms form.  High temperatures here will also climb well into the 80’s.

The best opportunity for widespread downpours and thunderstorms will be Sunday as the cold front finally moves across the state.  The front will clear our area and usher cooler and less humid weather into the area by the beginning of next week.  In the meantime, stay cool!

Sad news to report today. Three great men, Tim Samaras, his son, along with Carl Young, passed away while storm chasing during Friday’s storms west of Oklahoma City. These guys were not the typical thrill seeking storm chasers, but those who were out to help the community.

As you remember, Nick Rodick of West Winfield, went storm chasing this spring and actually spent some time chasing with Carl Young. This just shows you what a great guy he was.
