Strong storms possible...

Posted July 24th, 2010 by Bill Kardas. 97 comments

Some heavy flooding took place last night in Herkimer County.  Take a look at the doppler radar estimated rainfall.  That bright orange suggests more than 2" of rain fell between Middleville to Dolgeville.  The high levels of humidity in the air today will bring the potential for more heavy rains as we head into the night tonight.

For today, the weather looks to stay dreary through the morning hours.  The high levels of humidity are creating fog and drizzle this morning and the sunshine is going to have to work hard to clear that out.  In the warm sector, skies typically clear out during the afternoon this time of year.  We expect the same to happen today unless storms from the west scatter debris clouds over our area.  We won't know how that works until it's about to happen.

As for the thunderstorms, the cold front drving in from the west isn't going to cross Central New York until tomorrow morning.  On paper, that diminishes our threat for thunderstorms today.  I can't rule anything out based on all the weird boundaries that we usually have in Central New York on a day like today.  Still, the thought this morning is that not everyone gets wet this afternoon with thunderstorms.  Any thunderstorms that do develop today could produce some heavy rain.  Severe weather will be dependent on how much sunshine we get this afternoon.

Tonight's weather looks interesting.  An approaching cold front with high levels of humidity could spark some rare night time severe weather.  An upper level jet approaches the area along with a trigger (cold front).  Even though the storms move in during the overnight, there will still be enough energy in the atmosphere to sustain stronger storms.  High winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning are possible.

A shower or storm may linger around on Sunday as the front crosses the area early.  There will be gradual improvements in our weather through Sunday afternoon.

    Sara,

Tornadoes are not a concern today or tonight.

Now that is what I call rain!

Ended up with just under 2” (1.92 officially) in the last 24 hours. Unfortunately most of it came down hard and fast, and washed out my poor driveway again.

Looks like some interesting times later this afternoon and tonight, Is there any chance we get into the training that areas around Chicago are seeing?

  4. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

The most likely type of storm that will develop tonight is an MCS...which is a name for a large thunderstorm complex. These tend to produce frequent lightning, heavy rain, and gusty winds (not usually tornadoes).

Wow quite a bit of rain for the dolgeville / herkimer areas. Is the west canada still flooding ? Looking for action later on

Shear Profiles and CAPES look very impressive today over southern NY. The severe stuff should stay south of the valley this afternoon. However, like bill said, if we get alot of sunshine this afternoon we could see a few strong to severe thunderstorms. I would not be surprised to see some super cells along the NY and PA border, so that area could even see a few tornadoes tonight. BMG is talking about the possibility of a derecho. The profiles along with high surface dewpoint would best support derecho development from SW NY over into Binghamton and down into Pennsylvania.

So once again, the valley is gonna miss out on the action huh?

Starting to see the sun peeking out every once and a while. So far, I have picked up 0.07 inches of rain this morning. Temp and DP are 73/72

Mike, If a MCS develops we could see a decent light show tonight.

  19. Michael- (Dolgeville):

Storm total rainfall here between 6a.m. Friday and 6a.m Saturday was 3.74” inches. 2.06” inches of that fell in just three hours early this morning. There is no flooding occuring at this time, but streams are still running very high and fast.

Sar. The chance for a tornado is extremely low for our area, if there are any tornadoes they would be well south of the Mohawk Valley.

I’m back to an overcast with a little rain coming down. Right now It’s 74/72

  22. Bill:

Are derecho’s or supercells a concern for today?

Posted July 24th at 1:06 PM

  23. Becky (West Leyden):

Sar, I don’t think Central and Northern NY will be will have the right set-up Most of the derechos that hit New York State and other areas in the Northeast are associated with an unusual boundary layer through 850 theta-e with sfc dewpoints of around 73 to 75 and dewpoints at 850mb approaching 64F. Also, mid level lapse rates are above 7.5 C/Km. It seems they need that jarring persistent 500-700mb ridge to form to our west. This seems to fill the bill for all the Northeast derechos I’ve looked at.

Posted July 24th at 1:12 PM

  24. Becky (West Leyden):

Sar, the Binghamton area forecast discussion this morning. “AS FOR THE TYPE OF CONVECTION...I CUD SEE A DERECHO OR PROBABLY SCTRD SUPERCELLS DVLPING INITIALLY...WHICH EVOLVE INTO A DERECHO. AGAIN EXACTLY WHERE...WHEN AND WHAT TIME IN OUR FORECAST AREA IS UNCERTAIN. WE HAVE ALREADY AUGMENTED AND ADDED STAFFING FOR OUR DAY AND EVENING SHIFTS TODAY TO BE PREPARED”. Like I posted in 9 if there were to be a derecho it would be well away from the Mohawk Valley, in SW NY and along the NY PA border.

    #69,

The front is still back to the west, across Ontario and Michigan. The thunderstorms you see on radar are the result of a pre-fronal trough, out ahead of the actual front.

Severe weather is still possible, though the inital batch of thunderstorms has weakened. Severe t-storm watch remains in effect for portions of CNY until 11:00.

    fairfield,

I suspect the green triangles you see are hail markers.

The rain in the southern tier should move out 3-4 pm timeframe. We will see the dewpoint keep dropping for the rest of the afternoon. For the coming week , Monday – Tuesday look nice however, a few showers could pop-up downwind of Lake Ontario, don’t You love those pesky lake breeze boundaries : ) the latest model runs, show a weak front moving through sometime Wednesday. Right now, it looks like the coming weekend will be nice.
