Strong storms possible today...

Posted May 29th, 2013 by Bill Kardas. 59 comments

A warm front combined with a disturbance will help produce thunderstorms this afternoon & potentially severe weather.  A few thunderstorms today could be capable of producing winds in excess of 60mph and/or hail larger than quarter size.  Most storms today bring heavy rain and gusty winds. Behind the front, humid and hot weather to arrive starting Thursday.

Setup:

All three main ingredients will be in place for stronger storms today - instability (heat and humidity), wind shear (wind changing speed/direction with height), and a trigger.  CAPE, a measurement of instability, could climb as high as 1500-2000 j/kg this afternoon.  This all depends on the sunshine - how much do we clear out today is still unknown.  There are plenty of breaks in Western New York developing...once the warm front lifts north it should warm up nicely.  If we hit 80° today we will have a higher risk for stronger storms.

One thing we watch closely with thunderstorms is wind shear.  Wind shear makes storms much more dangerous, because it can separate the updraft of a storm from the downdraft, allowing the storm to last longer and produce more violent weather - in some rare cases - tornadoes.  Wind shear looks good, plenty of that today along the front.  Low and mid level wind shear is sufficient to produce rotating single cell storms.  We'll be watching for that potential again today.  Although we don't expect to see a tornado today, the setup makes it possible.  SPC has a 5% risk for a tornado within a 25 mile point north and east of Utica today.  That's a low risk, but relatively high for this part of the country since we usually don't see this kind of weather.

The trigger is a shortwave riding along a warm front.  This trigger is similar to the kind we saw last week.  This will initiate storms during the afternoon here in CNY - between 1-3pm at the earliest.  The first couple of storms will need to be watched - single celled storms would have the ability to rotate in this kind of environment.  Rotating storms have a higher chance of producing large hail and strong wind.  Single storms will evolve into a larger cluster of storms as they march east.  The threat would then evolve into mainly wind and heavy rain.

Recap

Rain this morning gives way to sunshine.  A dry late morning and early afternoon before thunderstorms develop between 1-3pm.  Storms in the afternoon could be on the strong side, capable of producing gusty winds and hail.  Heavy rain is possible as the storms march east later in the day.  This should wrap up by the evening hours (after 5pm).

We'll be keeping a close eye on things throughout the afternoon and keep you up to speed here on the blog.
