If this pattern keeps up, Winter 2011-2012 will probably go down as one of the most timid winters ever here in CNY. The pattern does snap temporarily this weekend, as a shot of some cold and snow arrives.
Blast of cold air for weekend...
This unusually quiet stretch of weather will be coming to an end Friday night. An arctic front drops in from the northwest, likely bringing a line of snow squalls and wind. Temperatures drop into the teen and single digits by Saturday morning.
Second punch?
The models are converging on the idea of another blast of cold air on Sunday. The computer models have had a hard time figuring out this feature. The past few days the cold stayed north, but the recent model runs bring it here. We'll keep tabs on it, but it could mean an extended taste of bitterly cold air with perhaps additional snowfall.
How much snow this weekend?
With bitterly cold temperatures and a bit of a wind there is the potential for accumulating snow. With the great amounts of inconsistency in the models, I'd like to give it another 24 hours before making an official snowfall forecast. Friday's feature looks moisture starved, so perhaps an inch or two. The front on Sunday, if it holds together, has a better chance of bringing accumulating snow. We'll keep tabs on this over the next few days and bring you the latest details and updates here.

18 degrees. calm and clear. I’m going to agree to….It’s been a snoozer of a winter-weather wise.
It would be interesting to see if the warmer weather and sunnier days has had any affect on decreased instances of “cabin fever” and the “blahs” that usually happen during the winter…..Increased Vit D from the sun should decrease “depression symptoms” that usually increases during the winter months….

The new model runs have backed off on the push of cold air. It looks like we’ll be in the 20s on Saturday as the front stalls near the coast. A storm develops and brings snowfall to New England on Saturday.
The secondary push of cold on Sunday should generate some lake effect snow. The wind field at this point looks to be too northerly for significant accumulation in our area. We’ll keep an eye on it though.

That figures in a winter that is not a winter, no surprise here.
The models show a pretty good snow storm for next Friday and Saturday. TWO THINGS AGAINST IT: THE ZERO DEGREE BLUE LINE NO LONGER MEANS SNOW and it is a week out. The zero degree line used to mean cold enough to produce snow with temperatures around 30 at the surface and below freezing aloft. Lately, being between the zero and the -10 line means 35 to 40 surface temperatures. Confused. What gives?

Good morning! The actual cold front is still to our west, so expect a few light snow showers this morning and early afternoon. Temperatures will begin to fall back into the 20s once the front passes. The second cold front moves in tonight and behind it, cold Canadian air pushes into the region. Lake effect snow develops tomorrow with a 310 flow, so primarily over Madison and Onondaga Counties.
