Significant T'Storms Possible Tuesday...

Well, the more I look at the data, the less I'm worried about a major severe weather outbreak up here. It might seem strange for the SPC to put us in slight risk on Day 3, keep us there on Day 2 and add a 30% possibility. Someone even asked if they were leaning toward Moderate risk for tomorrow. I doubt we see that. In fact, I think we see things almost stay "as is," with a couple tweaks.

First off, we hit 94 degrees today. The old record of 92, set way, way back in 2005 is toast. This was our hottest day since August 2, 2007, when we also hit 94 degrees.

Did we have an official heat wave? No. 90, 90, 87, 94 today...you need three consecutive days of 90+ for an official heat wave. Albany had an official heat wave (and they didn't hit 90 on Friday... 94, 91, 94 the last three days). This is VERY common for this area. There have been at least 4 or 5 events in the last two or three summers that I've been here that we missed a heat wave by a degree or two. I've never seen a place with so many 87-89 days that should have been 90+! Congrats to Toms River, NJ for making it to 100 degrees. Newark hit 99, Atlantic City hit 98 and Philly hit 97 degrees.

That said, we do have a chance to make it four out of five tomorrow. I think t'storms will hold off until after 1-2 PM. Latest model guidance keeps us dry until at least 2 PM. Should that happen 89-92 is likely. So we'll see.

Now about those storms. We could see a few clusters of storms pop up through the early afternoon out ahead of the main line to our west. Let's take a look at what this line is going to be plowing into....

From the SPC's short range ensemble forecast this morning, you can see there is a greater than 50% probability that CAPE exceeds 2,000 J/kg. For those not as tuned into the technical jargon... CAPE basically measures the "energy" available for t'storms to use. The higher the value, the better chance (as long as there is a trigger) you will get strong to severe storms. Anytime you get a CAPE over 1,000 it's a favorable setup. A CAPE over 2,000 is extremely favorable. Again, remember, you need some sort of trigger. Today we had CAPE values probably close to 3,000! But, the lack of any trigger and a strongly capped atmosphere prevented anything from popping. Tomorrow, however, a big ole' cold front plowing through is as good a trigger as you'll find. Here's a look at the NAM from 5 PM to 8 PM tomorrow. Notice plenty of precip coming in a solid line. There's a line of t'storms there for sure.

So what will happen? I think between 12 and 2 or 3 PM, we'll see a few rogue storms develop. Any of these could quickly go strong to severe, and may be the best shot at very damaging wind and large hail. Some areas will see storms. Others will see squat. Then, between about 4 and 8 PM, the main squall line should plow through here. With it, everyone will see strong storms, with the potential for some sort of bowing segment that travels a long way across the state and causes wind damage...if this happens and where it happens remains to be seen. I could see some large polygon warnings in this instance. My guess will be that when all is said and done, we get lots of generic trees/wires blown down storm reports from across the state...maybe one or two interesting wind damage reports, along with a handful of penny to golf ball size hail reports.

The big thing acting against a major severe outbreak are the winds aloft. We have southwest winds from the surface up several thousand feet. Southwest winds are warm. In order to generate very powerful storms, you want to see cooler temperatures aloft (what we call a "cold pool"). Because when you generate that cold air aloft, you can help a thunderstorm to explode and produce powerful winds. It looks like the timing of wind shifts is not exactly favoring major severe. So that's why, for now, I'm terming it a "classic" storm day. That said, with anywhere from 2,500 to 3,500 J/kg of CAPE and lifted indices as low as -6, we will need to watch for any sudden changes. The atmosphere tomorrow is a powder keg...the question remains though if we'll be able to line things up right. I'm thinking we won't, but we'll see.

Those sick of the humidity, take note! Wednesday will be a beautiful day. If not then, then Thursday will work too...sunny, warm, low humidity. So enjoy.

Rob: In re: to your post in the other entry...it's possible, but I definitely think this will weaken, much like we saw yesterday. Although, stranger things have happened.

They left a 5% risk up for WNY.Looks like they're weakening a bit right now.Few small cells around BUF.

What keeps a MCS going through the overnight hours?I remember several complexes held together quite well last month during the nighttime and went right into the next morning. When ever we see something make a run at us..it just dies off.Any particular reason?

Posted June 9th at 9:19 PM

  4. Matt Lanza:

Rob: These things often feed off a low level jet (strong winds at 850 mb). So you'll get the storms to develop in the late afternoon/evening. Then the LLJ kicks in overnight, so the whole system continues through daybreak. So assuming it gets going around 7-8 PM, you see it weaken in the morning most often. They usually have about an 8-12 hour lifespan. As for them not hitting us, we had our fun Thursday night. So it's more luck than anything I think. Plus, we've been very much under the influence of the ridge, which tends to squash a lot of convection...it's not a perfect pattern for us to get multips MCS's. The interaction with the lakes is also more difficult this time of year. It can either help or hinder it depending on any number of circumstances.

Given that we still have CAPE values at or above 2,000 right now, I would say that there's a good chance we see a few t'storms begin developing over the next few hours.

  6. Rob(whitesboro):

Yep there starting to fire.Or at least some heavier showers. Those storms still don't look half bad to the west. They looked like they were going to fizzle out for awhile.

Posted June 9th at 10:01 PM

  7. Michael- (Dolgeville):

76 degrees as of 10p.m. Albany says that they need to watch for any development as CAPE/instability still remain high enough for storms to fire like Matt said. I see there is one little cell north of Herkimer moving towards me.

Well here in ilion we just had a down pour and i will tell you what you can feel the few degree drop it went from being 79 to 77 in a matter of a few minutes and oh it feels so much better out right now!

now the storm out by rochester is that going to hold together do you think and hit us hard or what

  9. Bob Jones:

Jessie, do you ever bother to even read anything anyone writes? Hmmm. Matt said that a few storms woudl develop over the next few hours. If you would read, you would get the answers to your panicky questions about the big bad thunderstorms. you ought to learn to deal with them rather than freaking out over them every time one pops up.

Posted June 9th at 10:35 PM

  10. Matt Lanza:

One thing that is a bit interesting is that the new showers that have formed are on a line from about Rutland, VT through Utica, Syracuse and back to the main complex of storms near Buffalo. With that in mind, you would think this might follow that line...albeit weakened. But there. So I think there's a good chance now that we see showers and some rumbles tonight.

Posted June 9th at 10:50 PM

  11. Michael- (Dolgeville):

Jessie, I sure wouldn't loose sleep over it. Don't worry about it, this appears to be VERY minor showers and maybe a rumble of thunder. Nothing to be concerned with. I want to say this as nicely as possible Jessie, you should try to conquer your fear of thunderstorms because they are going to happen the rest of your life, and it isn't going to be much of a life panicking every time we get a bolt of lightning. We all get scared by them at one time or another, myself included. For me, I get a little nervous when I have constant cloud to ground lightning hitting within a half mile of my house. I'm sure Matt and all the rest of us have been scared to death by storms one time or another.

Posted June 9th at 11:05 PM

  12. Matt Lanza:

Michael: I had to stay under blankets in a room with the light on or I wouldn't sleep as a kid. Now you'll find me trying to drive into storms....quite the turnaround! :) Agree with you...they're going to keep happening, so might as well learn to deal with them.

Posted June 9th at 11:08 PM

  13. Michael- (Dolgeville):

WOW Matt! I would have never guessed that. I was never one to get scared as a kid by storms. I was more cautious than anything (I still am). I can remember back in 1998, I was 11 at the time and we had went down to Florida for a few weeks. One afternoon on our way back from Disney, the sky was as black as could be. I wanted to go "chasing" to see the storm, so my family took me to an area along a river next to a radio station. Well, as much as I wanted to go I wouldn't get out of the van because there was a 500ft radio tower about a hundred feet from us, and I knew it would be a target for lightning. Well as soon as everyone got back in the van, sure enough a nice big bolt of lightning stikes the tower. It felt pretty cool to be smarter than adults! Also, that day at the river was the first and only time I ever seen a funnel cloud. I remember one of the guys showing me the rotating clouds with binoculars. That was the best part of our little "chase".

That cell in eastern Fulton county has really blew up fast. More "popcorn-like" cells firing just west of Utica. Shouldn't be a big deal though.

  15. Becky (West Leyden):

Like Matt, I too was terrified of storms as a child. I remember one time being on my porch and seeing lightning split a tree about 300 feet away. I remember not going outside for a few day after that. That said, In order to get over my fear, I learned a lot about severe weather including lightning. Over the years I have falling in love with weather in all its splendid forms. I've chased severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. and there are still times I get a little nervous when there is a lot of lightning around me. So Jessie I guess the moral of the story is to face your fear and learn all you canE. It will eventually make you stronger. And because of it have a much greater passion for life.

    Good stories guys!

And yes...that storm in Fulton County exploded...at one point you could see the lightning from our area...and it was flashing every 5-10 seconds at least. Best light display I've seen from an individual storm in a long time!

Posted June 10th at 1:25 AM

  18. Michael- (Dolgeville):

SPC has now put us into a MODERATE RISK for severe thunderstorms. They have us in a 45% zone for damaging wind and 5% chance for tornadoes. NWS Albany is really emphasising the potential and even using the words "major severe weather outbreak" and possible tornadoes in their forecast discussion. CAPES look incredibly high as well. Looks like today is going to be the day for severe weather!

Must of been, I counted alot of lightning from my view down here from where I am at. I tried to capture some shots from it but they came out horrible the lightning was a bit to fast than me and my camera. The lightning was pretty neat! I did hear a few rumbles of thunder off in the distance.

Posted June 10th at 7:00 AM

  27. Rob(whitesboro):

Even with all the severe weather events last year...we were never in the moderate risk area.So this is definitely very interesting.EHI values go up as high as 3.0 in some areas.Plenty of clear skies this morning as well to add to the parameters.CAPE is up over 1000 already at 7:30.

Posted June 10th at 7:43 AM

  28. Michael- (Dolgeville):

Yeah Rob. I don't remember us being in a moderate risk either in the past few years. I think this is the first time I personally have seen us in that. Heres NWS Alabny's HWO.
A WIDESPREAD SEVERE THUNDERSTORM OUTBREAK IS EXPECTED
TODAY....MAINLY THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. SUPERCELLS WILL FORM
ALONG AND AHEAD OF A COLD FRONT THIS AFTERNOON...AND ORGANIZE
INTO A SQUALL LINE. THE MAIN THREATS WILL BE DAMAGING
WINDS...FREQUENT LIGHTNING AND ISOLATED TORNADOES ARE POSSIBLE

  30. Jack (Clark Mills):

Could be a very interesting day. as of now 8:20am the SPC has us at 45% for wind, 15% for hail and (drum roll) 5% for tornados. But seriously, not thrilled about getting any of that stuff when I'm gonna be stuck at work, personnally I'd rather be home incase anything should happen.

Posted June 10th at 8:26 AM

  31. Michael- (Dolgeville):

76 degrees here. Temps are rising fast as well. Went from 72 to 76 in about a half an hour. Digital camera is charged and ready to go.

Posted June 10th at 8:32 AM

  32. Matt Lanza:

Well, after looking at the 00Z data, I had a feeling they might upgrade to Mdt. It was much more conducive for big storms. Thing is...while there is a slight risk that some storms develop into supercells initially (hence the 5% tornado risk), the threat is quickly going to transition to wind damage. Storms should develop into a squall line...an MCS probably...and push through later this afternoon. Conditions will be ripe for a squall line with strong winds, probably damaging winds...so if you hear us mention any warnings today, you need to pay extra attention to them. We'll make clear what's going on in the storms if they're warned.

  33. Working in Utica:

What is an MCS? Sounds bad.

Posted June 10th at 9:04 AM

  34. Matt Lanza:

Working: MCS is a complex of thunderstorms...can be general with heavy rain and no severe weather. Or it can be well organized with lots of lightning and embedded very strong winds/large hail and sometimes isolated tornadoes too. A lot to chew on today for us. Radar needs to be watched very closely this afternoon to see how this will evolve.

I should add for anyone wondering. The general forecast and timing is laid out in the entry. That has not changed. Basically, what we'll do in the blog today is, as we can, update the situation, if any storms develop, etc. We won't be able to answer all the "in my backyard" questions, but we'll do our best to make clear who will be affected by anything.

Is an event like this similar to the Labor Day storm that did a lot of damage at the NYS Fair 7 or 8 years ago?

Posted June 10th at 9:09 AM

  36. Matt Lanza:

Working: That was a once in a long time event, so I would be very hesitant to compare anything to that at all. That's the benchmark for bad storms here (along with 1995 in the 'Dacks). So we won't turn it into something that it's not, but...as far as setups for nasty storms go, this is a good one.

Posted June 10th at 9:49 AM

Well, Albany is concerned enough to send up two extra weather balloons today. They usually send them up at 8 AM and 8 PM. On bad weather days, they'll usually do an extra one at 2 PM. However, they have a 2 PM and a 10 AM launch scheduled. I'm guessing the 10 AM is scheduled just in case there are storms around for the 2 PM one...but still, I've never seen that from them.

But there is the chance that an isolated tornado or two spins up somewhere. Again, we'll be monitoring through the day.

Posted June 10th at 10:38 AM

  48. Matt Lanza:

Lavender: You stay where you are for now because there's no reason to go anywhere (no storms at this point). If a severe thunderstorm warning were issued for your location, you should stay put and away from windows. If a tornado warning were issued, you go to the lowest level of your home in an interior room. Basements are perfect in that instance. But if you don't feel comfortable, just stay at the lowest level in an interior room, away from windows, and try and cover yourself with as much as possible. Put as much between you and the outer walls of your house as possible.

I wouldn't worry too much because the odds of your specific location being impacted by a tornado are extremely low, even with a watch up. Just keep an eye on things.

I work in Clinton but will be driving home to W/boro around 4:30 and a little nervous I will be caught in a nasty storm,! I will obviously be paying close attention to the reports!

Posted June 10th at 11:47 AM

  69. Tina:

Jessie, I'll try to put this as politely as possible - the channel 2 weather team has a huge responsibility to forecast for the ENTIRE viewing area. Do you know what a huge task that is? The area is enormous. They just don't have time to pinpoint what one persons personal forecast is - especially when there is a large weather system like this one coming into the area.
All they can do is let you know what they see for your GENERAL area, not what's on top of you at every given moment. And everyone gets a bit panicked by storms like this, but they don't throw their fears onto the weather team and ask them what's going to go on with the weather for them personally in the next few minutes or hours.
Just do like most of us and read what info they can give you on the blog and try to figure out what's in store for your own area without cluttering the specifics for them to answer you personally because you or your kids are scared. The team does one heck of a job on here, and I thank them.
So, just read and take the best guess you can at what's going on for you and let them get on with what they do best. OK? :)

  70. Mel (Westernville):

If you are wondering if your specific town is going to have a storm move through, we post the warnings on the blog to inform everyone on where the storm is heading. After this line moves through, we will have a second round of storms, with the cold front later this afternoon, after 4PM. In both cases, there is potential for strong winds.

If it helps, if you go to the weather channel they also have a dopler radar that comes up when you put in your zip code, and you can see the town names, and you can also watch the radar in motion. The colors are the different echo intensities (reflectivity) measured in dBZ (which stands for decibels of Z) "Reflectivity" is the amount of transmitted power returned to the radar receiver. Reflectivity which is designated by the letter Z. It covers a wide range of signals weak to strong. The DBZ can be determined by the color chart Hail can be detected using radar. One thing of note is some website radar use different color scales. So find the help menu to see what the colors mean. On Doppler radar, hail generally sends a return signal that looks like extremely heavy rainfall. Hail is a good reflector of energy and will return very high dBZ values

i was just working outside on a roof in alder creek about an hour ago, lucky we got off in time. there were strong winds and heavy rain. i didnt see much if any hail, but we did see what i believe to be funnel clouds right before the rain started. in several different spots there were noticeable rotations in the clouds. it was pretty exciting. you think we might see more of that later?

Working: A line of strong winds that's thrust out of a thunderstorm and can produce damage. Same thing as a microburst or downburst, depending on size.

Working in Utica: Straight-line wind is wind that comes out of a thunderstorm. If these winds meet or exceed 58 miles per hours then the storm is classified as severe by the NWS. Winds near thunderstorms can be gust, outflow or downdraft

Well, clouds are rapidly breaking from west to east and we'll be into sun soon. Instability indices continue to creep back up toward earlier values. What does this mean? It means after about 3 PM-4 PM, we should begin to see new storms break out to our west. Some questions remain as to how strong or severe these storms will be. The best I can tell you is to keep an eye to the sky. Conditions will be ripe for new storms in a few hours.

Crew.... I'm out here at my camp in Sylvan Beach....the storm was quick but really neat to watch as it rolled in over the lake. It was calm one minute then the waves were up! The light show, even for daylight hours, was terrific.

Also....let people post their questions...whatever they may be. There is no reason to tell people they are stupid, etc. for asking a question. If the WKTV crew has an issue with the posts, they will inform the poster. Life is too short to belittle people.....let's all have fun with this blog and our mutual love of the weather!

Ok, got pictures of the N. Onedia storm. Got the "funnel" cloud. Personally I think it was just a cloud shaped as one. Here are the direct links. That storm is N. Onedia was very dangerous, I stayed out along the boundaries. Was hearing reports of quarter size hail. The early storm that was North of Port leyden was also dangerous but it weakend as I was interecepting. Trees and wires down in N. Onedia. Rt 12/28 North of Alder Creek.

Talked to the NWS and we concur that it was probably not a true funnel cloud...looks like what we call "scud" clouds, which often resemble a funnel, but isn't. Still, it's a great photo and a good example of how easy it is to fool someone. Dave, if you're convinced it was a funnel still, send an email and description to bgm.stormreport@noaa.gov.

Matt: Do you think that those storms the the West will hit us here in Sauquoit??

Posted June 10th at 6:09 PM

  220. Matt Lanza:

I'm watching a ton of stuff blow up to our west. While I don't think the tornado threat is there, I am very concerned with a strong line of straight line winds. It's developed in Cortland and Onondaga Counties and is moving right toward Madison County. 50-70 mph winds possible with that. New cells are firing ahead of it...and also on the backside of the Binghamton storm. Any one of these could go severe very fast. Between now and 7:30 PM I would plan to just stay put. Conditions should deteriorate rapidly here over the next hour.

Storms were hardest from Waterville through Clayville into Ilion and Frankfort, then to just north of the HCCC campus. This line will be merging with another cell near Dolgeville, which could be interesting. It may minimize the wind impacts though, so we'll see. Stay indoors in Dolgeville and into Fulton County.

Most of the rest of the area is now basically clear.

Matt: Are you sure you clocked 74 mph? We're on a hill here and we didn't get higher than 40. Rome only gusted to 55. So I don't see how anyone this far north could have gusted over 60.

That said, the first batch of wind was an outflow boundary (or cold air pouring out of storms) moving through.

Now that all the excitement has passed, I have a couple of techie questions for the WKTV crew. Is there a button of some sort that can be added to the blog page to refresh it so that you don't have to go throught the entire blog front page when hitting your browser's refresh?

Also, I have a Blackjack phone. I used to be able to access the blog from it before the blog was changed, now I can't view it on my phone. Is there a way to make the blog smartphone accessible? I like to stay in the know while out and about.

Finally breathing here in the weather center....it's been a long, long day. So far, most interesting reports we've received are: Tree on a house in Paris, golf ball size hail in a couple spots in Otsego County, 67 mph wind gust at Rome, lots of wind damage in Lewis and northern Herkimer Counties. Those areas seemed to take the brunt of the storms today. I wouldn't be shocked to see reports of a large scale downburst or tornado in Lewis, Oswego, Jefferson, St. Lawrence Counties. There's a ton of tree damage up there, and it's very rural, so I'll bet we won't hear much about it until tomorrow.

Mike (N. Rome) - I don't know if IE has this, but Firefox has a feature where you can right click within the frame, go to This Frame, and select reload. The problem is that when they switched platforms, someone decided that for integration, iframes would be the way to go, and as you can see, there are many problems. I can't believe out of all those severe reports yesterday we didn't have one confirmed tornado anywhere in the northeast.I thought for sure one of those in individual cells would spawn at least one or two yesterday.I don't even recall a Warning.I think we'll end up having one confirmed today in S. Jefferson county.A woman from Montague was travelling over that way and actually saw the twister on the ground.

Good morning everyone. Just wanted to thank the wktv weather team for the great job thry dod keeping us up to date yesterday. I thought it was going to be much worse up here than it was. Got some strong winds as both rounds went through and lots of lightning. No damage in my particular area that I know of but I beleive that Woodgate had some trees down. We lost power for about 3 to 5 minutes as round 2 went through last night but that was it. Again thank you weather team for keeping us all up to date.

Posted June 11th at 9:08 AM

  303. Matt Lanza:

Sarah: No problem. Rob...honestly, I was really surprised they pulled the trigger on a Tornado Watch. Wind profiles yesterday showed minimal directional shear. If we were going to get a tornado yesterday, it was going to come via some type of interaction with a valley (near Albany with the Mohawk/Hudson Valley convergence for example). It was definitely a great setup for powerful winds, which is what we really saw. I was also a little surprised at the hail reports in Otsego County. We had 90-95 degrees there yesterday afternoon, it was warm way up too, so these storms must have been producing extremely powerful updrafts to generate golf ball size hail there. If the temps aloft were cooler, it might have been a little bigger. But all in all, it behaved basically as we expected. There were 446 storm reports yesterday across the US, with about 75% of those occurring in the Northeast. Not a single tornado report anywhere. All in all a very impressive day.

Matt: when you get a chance (you deserve a BIG break after yesterday's events)...could you send me graphical info depicting significant weather information to look at (minus radar images; not interested in those) that covered the mid Montgomery County area during yesterday's weather? I find it VERY interesting that here in Fonda we did not get much of anything;(2 minutes of dime hail around 5:15pm, brief heavy rain and good wind gusts (nothing major)around 7:50-8:08 pm, some distant thunder, and that's about it.....and I'm not complaining as I, too, get quite anxious during these kinds of events.... I would like to try and learn about what the conditions were during those times...I hope I'm not asking for too much??? I just want to learn more about how mother nature operates sometimes! And thanks, in advance....actually ANYONE is invited to send a link or two if they want...! After all, that's what this blog is for?

  307. Dave (Skywarn:

Went for a ride up in Lewis county then around the horn to Oswego via Jefferson county, now, looking at some trees that were down they just might have had a small tornado, but no one to report it, some spots the trees were layed in the fashion of that of a tornadic event, if I had an airplane or helicopter to really look and take good pictures I would feel better about throwing the word out, but as of now, microburst / straight line winds are my guess for the damage.

Posted June 11th at 12:56 PM

  308. Jeff (Southern Hills):

JMD- best bet is its geographical. I live in Northern Chenango County and we had two separate storms bearing down on us that just didn't come to fruition. We recieved less then .10 of rain and had some winds and distant thunder and that is it. I didn't even see any lightning!! I believe down here it was definately some kind of wierd freak thing considering we had not had a storm earlier in the day. I can't say for sure but that would be my guess. In prior events with damaging winds we rarely see any problems but just 3-5 miles away (away from the hills) there is usually damage and sometimes heavy damage.

Posted June 11th at 12:59 PM

  309. Rob(whitesboro):

We'll see what BUF says later today.I'm sure they are surveying the damage in the towns of Worth and Lorraine there on the Osw/Jeff border. That was probably the most hardest hit area.Matt how are we looking for Saturday.Anything interesting?

Posted June 11th at 1:02 PM

  310. Matt Lanza:

Jmd: Are you looking for like a map of storm reports? I can give you that, but if it's not radar, I don't think I can be of much help!

Dave: I would encourage/ask you to send an email to NWS Buffalo about that. I'm not sure if they really think much happened there (and obviously, it's a heck of a haul from there to here to send a storm survey team). But, if you really think it was tornado damage, definitely send an email...patterns like that usually don't lie.

I am going to try and put together some older radar images tonight lined up with the time of the damage reports in some areas...just to see if I can show you certain signatures to look for in wind damage situations. Might be a two night process, but I'll be giving it a shot.

  315. Jmd (Fonda):

Lol,!!! about the cows! Jeff/Southern Hills: I totally agree with what you're saying,AND I especially think it has to do with our geographical location you may know of as the "Noses" (Big Nose on North side of St Hwy 5 and Little Nose on south side of 5 with Mohawk River/Barge Canal in between... that's why I asked for some kind of chart to look at similar to the NAM/GFS things that are mentioned here so often to see for myself what the conditions were at the times when things were and were NOT happening....not being scientific at all about this, there is a general rationalization that's been talked about for generations that blame is to be laid on those landmarks....so maybe it's true....I do know that our dew point was not over 60 at any time that I looked at conditions, (but I don't know how accurate the readings were)...so thanks for suggesting!

Posted June 11th at 4:07 PM

  317. Matt Lanza:

JMD: It will be tough to get you that information. One thing about the NAM/GFS...those are what we call computer models. They basically make forecasts for us, and using our intuition, experience, knowledge, we tweak them to what we feel will occur...or in some cases we throw them out if we disagree with them. With that in mind, they are too coarse in resolution to really pick up on why storms hit some parts of CNY and not others...they cover too broad an area to be that small scale. That being said, though, there is some impact the terrain and geography has on some areas. For instance, with a south wind, the Mohawk Valley ends up seeing less precipitation because the wind is forced down the terrain and into the valley, drying it out and evaporating much of the precipitation. However, something as small as what you're describing likely does not have much impact. Now, you mentioned your dewpoint being 60. That's possible. If that were the case, most of the storms would have lost much of their punch by the time they got to your area. There were no storm reports received by NWS Albany for Montgomery or Schoharie Counties it appears yesterday. I think you were more a "victim" of bad (good) luck than anything. The biggest storms yesterday were triggered by some sort of boundary northeast of Binghamton. The flow yesterday was southwest to northeast. Those storms developed near Oneonta, raced northeast and ended up travelling into SE Herkimer/NW Montgomery and Fulton/Hamilton Counties. Not much developed far enough east to really get you. And when the main line came through, it was still organizing, so anything big wouldn't have happened.

I hope this helps at least a little. Lots of little things going on yesterday around here.

Posted June 11th at 6:07 PM

  318. Jmd (Fonda):

Thanks Matt...and FYI, along with the "lower" dew point yesterday we had quite of bit of wind all day long; just didn't feel that humid out compared to previous two days; cloud formations were a bit strange; the thunderheads weren't in view; there were a lot of cumulus type small clouds that had a flattened bottom at about a 45 degree angle (if you can imagine what I'm trying to describe...you probably have some professional term for what they were.... ;)

Just an update on the situations...

Salina, KS was clipped by the tornado, it appears. The south side received damage, including some to a nursing home. That storm is still tornadic and racing into NE Kansas (latest word was a 1/2 mile diameter wedge on the ground).

The boy scout camp was in bad shape. Word is that they were in the main hall when the storm hit... 35+ injuries, still only 4 fatalities, but sadly, I suspect that number will rise. They did have tornado sirens, so they had warning. Hopefully we'll get some good news on this.

I just found out about this.According to the Lewis County Sheriff's department, A 47-year-old from the town of Croghan was killed loading logs around 12:15 pm yesterday when high winds brought down the trees around him. Some of the trees struck him from behind while he was at the controls of his loader, pinning him against the frame. A co-worker found him a little while later. Rescue efforts were hampered by downed power lines and trees throughout the area.

Manhattan, KS (large town) sustained a direct hit from a tornado, with significant damage to the Kansas State Univ campus, but thankfully no injuries despite multiple camps there. No new news from the boy scout camp in Iowa, but I believe ~ 40 were injured and everyone has been accounted for. Don't know how good or bad that will end up, but you'll be hearing about it tomorrow.

Hello: I can't tell you what the weather channel means when they say that...we have 0 to do with their forecasts. As for the weather video, it should be working, as it is clipped. I'm guessing it's a problem on our video content provider's end, which I'm sure they are aware of, so keep checking back. If not, the discussion lays everything out nicely for you.

MG: At this point I'm not too terribly impressed. It looks similar to Tuesday in some ways, but with a lot less punch. So not gray and rainy. I'm thinking sun/clouds with a line of storms in the afternoon, perhaps preceded by a few rogue storms. A few severe storms are possible.

weather team - just wondering what your thoughts were for the weekend of 6/20 - 6/22. I heard on the noon news that its supossed to be cooling off a bit. we were planning to go to old forge that weekend but maybe not if its going to get that cold. thanks.

  352. Matt Lanza:

Sn: Too early to say with much (any) certainty, but the general trend is indicating we bottom out in the temperature department by midweek, with recovery by the weekend. I would expect seasonable conditions (mid 70s) at this point. As for precipitation, we probably will run the risk of a shower or storm, but it's too early to cancel plans over it.

  354. Becky (West Leyden):

Looks like the temps will be back up into the mid to upper 80s with dewpoints soar into the upper 60’s by Saturday. Saturdays capes will be around 2500 J/KG also the shear could be ratter high. So Saturday evening and overnight looks like it could be little stormy when this cold front comes thru Saturday.

  355. Matt Lanza:

Becky: Saturday looks like a smaller scale version of Tuesday...very, very similar setup...maybe not quite as juicy as what we had out there Tues...but I imagine we'll be tracking several strong to severe storms this weekend.

As an aside, tracking a tornado heading very near Madison, Wisconsin...hopefully that tails off to the south and east of the city, but it looks close.

Also, NWS sent a survey team up to CNY today to investigate damage in Taberg, and they concluded that it wasn't a tornado, but straight line winds...which we sort of figured...there were no signs of anything tornadic in our area Tuesday...here's their assessment:

    PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
    NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BINGHAMTON NY
    457 PM EDT THU JUN 12 2008

...STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE IN TABERG FROM TUESDAY`S STORMS...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CONDUCTED A STORM SURVEY IN ONEIDA
COUNTY OF A THUNDERSTORM THAT AFFECTED THE TABERG AREA DURING
THE EARLY AFTERNOON OF TUESDAY JUNE 10TH 2008.

THUNDERSTORM WINDS PRODUCED CONCENTRATED DAMAGE TO HARDWOOD
AND SOFTWOOD TREES AT CAMP KIWANIS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF TABERG.
APPROXIMATELY 40 TREES ON CAMP PROPERTY WERE AFFECTED BY STORM WINDS.
MOST OF THE TREES WERE VERY MATURE...2 TO 3 FOOT DIAMETER TRUNKS THAT
AVERAGED 40 TO 50 FEET TALL. SOME TREES COULD HAVE BEEN 75 FEET IN
HEIGHT. ELSEWHERE AROUND THE AREA...ISOLATED TREE DAMAGE WAS NOTED...
INCLUDING A 6 FOOT DIAMETER MAPLE ON SKINNER ROAD THAT WAS SNAPPED
OFF NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE TRUNK. ALL TREES WERE IN FULL CANOPY.
SOME OF THE FELLED TREES WERE NOTED TO BE WEAKENED FROM AGE...DISEASE
    OR INSECTS.

NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE DUE TO WIND WAS NOTED...HOWEVER A CAMP CABIN
WAS CLIPPED BY ONE OF THE FALLING TREES CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE ROOF
    AND GUTTERS. NOBODY WAS INJURED.

BASED ON THE UNIDIRECTIONAL DAMAGE PATTERN...AND INFORMATION OBTAINED
FROM EYEWITNESSES...THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE OF THIS DAMAGE WAS FROM
STRAIGHT LINE WINDS ASSOCIATED WITH A SMALL THUNDERSTORM MICROBURST.
GROUND LEVEL WINDS SPEEDS ARE ESTIMATED AT 60 TO 65 MPH WHICH CAUSED
NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. WIND SPEEDS AT TREETOP LEVEL LIKELY APPROACHED
90 MPH WHICH WAS STRONG ENOUGH TO CAUSE THE CONSIDERABLE TREE
DAMAGE. NARROW AND STEEP TERRAIN FEATURES NEAR THE CAMP MAY HAVE ALSO
HELPED TO LOCALLY ACCELERATE WINDS AS THEY IMPACTED THIS SMALL AREA

  356. Becky (West Leyden):

Another tornado just went past Cambridge Wisconsin.

Matt: The models are hinting at quite a bit of rain this weekend...Maybe on the order of two or three inches. What are your thoughts?
