Severe potential this afternoon...

Posted June 9th, 2009 by Bill Kardas. 70 comments

A cold front will swing through as we head into the afternoon and evening, serving as the mechanism for showers and thunderstorms.  As of 11am, a warm front that crossed the area earlier this morning is driving dewpoints and temperature higher across the area.  Dewpoints later on this afternoon are expected to make a run into the 60s...which is something we haven't seen much this season.  The most recent development has been sunshine breaking out across Western New York.  A large area of clearing is advancing into the region, and will allow the sun to break out early this afternoon.  Temperatures in this area of clearing are spiking into the upper 60s and low 70s at this hour, driving up instability in the atmosphere across Western New York.  Current caculated CAPE (a measure of instability) exceeds 2500 j/kg in spots out in Western New York.  This is very impressive to see in the Northeast.  This alone is cause for concern for what may happen later on today.  Thunderstorms, frequent lightning, small hail, and gusty winds are possible.  More details coming.....

11:30 AM Update.

Continued sunshine this morning for points west.  Still waiting for our area to clear out.  Wind shear continues to increase ahead of the front, as our area of low pressure advances east.  Strong wind shear is notorious for maintaining supercell thunderstorms, and is a contributor to tornadic activity.  While our going forecast doesn't mention tornadoes, it is possible for isolated tornadoes to develop in Western New York.

Bill, what time are we thinking for the onset of thunder and rain? I am in a golf league at 430 in Utica. Do you think it will hold off (the front) until 630 or 7?

Posted June 9th at 11:47 AM

  3. Bill Kardas:

The front is expected to cross between 5-7pm, but thunderstorms may be able to fire off sooner than that. The threat would be between 3-8pm today.

  4. Bill Kardas:

Syracuse now up to 81 degrees! Rome jumped to 72, a gain of 7 degrees in the last hour! The warm front is situated right over the area. SPC now talking about the possibility of issuing a severe thunderstorm watch.

  5. Rob (Whitesboro):

I got 73 degrees here with a dew of 66. Had full sunshine for an hour but starting to cloud up a little. Things are definitely looking better for storms. Starting to see a few pop to our west right now.

Early cells are popping out near Oneida Lake, east of Utica, and in Southern Oneida County.

  7. Bill Kardas:

The cloud tops are growing tremendously…I have a really nice view of that cell that’s passing east of Utica from Smith Hill. Wish I brought my camera.

  8. Rob (Whitesboro):

Looks like the warm nose has made it as far as Vernon. It’s 83 degrees there currently. That cell in Madison county is looking healthy.

Posted June 9th at 1:03 PM

  9. Bill Kardas:

    Rob,

Wow, that’s impressive! We’re at 76 so far…cell crossing Oneida is now flagging small hail. All the ingredients are in place…time to sit back and watch.

  10. Bill Kardas:

Severe thunderstorm watch up for Herkimer, Fulton, Montgomery, Otsego, & Chenango County until 8 PM this evening. What an odd way to draw a watch box. Not sure why Oneida and Madison aren’t included.

Posted June 9th at 1:33 PM

  11. Rob (Whitesboro):

Yeah that’s one crazy looking watch box. Best parameters look to be west of there. Up to 77 here. I don’t hear any thunder yet. Maybe it’s just a heavy shower.

Posted June 9th at 1:40 PM

64.6 degrees here. The sun acts like it wants to poke through, but hasn’t had much luck yet.

No real wind or hail with that cell. Just very heavy rain. It’s already moved through.

It looks like it’s strengthening as it moves east. There’s a decent hail signature with it now. Pretty close to severe levels. Sunshower going on here.

    It’s severe now!

Posted June 9th at 1:57 PM

Our StormTracker 2 Doppler is flagging 2” hail with this storm. That’s probably overdone but severe hail is a possibility.

Yeah this a good looking storm. At one point it had a 39k top. It’s trying to form a couplet on its SW end but having a hard time.

  20. Laura (working in Clinton):

Can very heavy rain confuse the radar into thinking it is hail? The rain came down in huge drops here. And, what it up with that watch box? I’ve never seen one that odd either.

Posted June 9th at 2:17 PM

  21. Bill Kardas:

Any reports of hail in southern Oneida County? Just curious, as our radar was showing large hail.

Had hail here at work in Clinton about pea size or a little bigger.

Posted June 9th at 2:20 PM

    Working,

It has to do with the overall wind direction. Generally speaking, thunderstorms that fire ahead of a cold front move from southwest to northeast, but it’s not etched in stone. Usually there is some westerly component to the wind in severe weather situations

Posted June 9th at 3:35 PM

  45. Rob (Whitesboro):

Well that’s it for me. I doubt anything else will pop to our west. At least we managed a few marginal supercells today. Still some 40k tops in Otsego county with some decent hail. Hopefully we won’t have to wait another couple weeks for the next round.

A friend of ours stopped over to our house last night and mentioned that he has heard that long term forecasts are predicting a lousy summer…actually the terminology used was “no summer at all”. With the way its been so far I am fearful that will happen. We’ve always had long term forecasts in the past and while I realize its just trends and patterns, I am curious to know if the WKTV team agrees or disagrees with this prediction.

Posted June 10th at 6:32 AM

  55. Bill Kardas:

    LM-

I’m not sure where your friend heard that, but the information we’ve been looking at suggests that we’re due for at least seasonable weather here over the next few weeks. As far as summer predictions, I disagree with the notion that we won’t have a summer at all this year. I believe that this pattern we’ve been in since late May has been an anomaly and will not necessarily dictate what will happen for the rest of the summer. Despite talks of cool weather in Canada, the rest of the country has been warming up nicely. If this pattern does break, watch out, things can change quickly! In the meantime, for you folks that want hot weather, be patient. Lots of summer still to go…at least 2 1/2 months worth!
