Reality Returns

More typical weather has returned to CNY just in time for the new work week now that a cold front has whisked away this weekend’s relative warmth.  With relatively dry air in place, quiet weather will prevail through Tuesday and Tuesday Night.

That same frontal boundary has put the brakes on over the Mid-Atlantic.  A few waves of low pressure will move along the front and spread precipitation to portions of the northeast.  The first wave of low pressure will keep its effects in the form of rain and snow away to our south through early Tuesday as it scoots out to sea.  The second area of low pressure has a little more energy to work with and looks to track a bit more to the north.  Models have converged on a track that would bring a shield of light snow to our area Wednesday morning, likely after daybreak.  Latest indications are that a couple of inches of snow could fall over portions of Central New York before the system quickly exits to the east by dinnertime.  Exact amounts will depend on the exact track of this low pressure wave.  Still, some light snow looks likely at this point during the Wednesday.

Partial clearing takes place for Wednesday Night.  On Thursday a stronger push of cold air looks to arrive from Canada.  Some timing differences exist as to exactly when on Thursday this new front will push through, but as it does so we run the risk of a few snow squalls.  This will be our next weather focus this week.  After that it appears that we’ll be going back and forth in and out of the deep freeze for a time into early next week.  We’ll bring you up to speed as details become clearer.  In the meantime, skiers get to smile.  Regardless of the amount and timing of each round of light snow, we’re confident that the overnights will be plenty cold enough to make snow on the ski slopes.  Enjoy!

On this date (15 Jan. 1957) The AP and UP reported that Boonville set a record low of -55F. The thermometer had not been calibrated and the record discarded.

That’s impressive — your average non-digital thermometer doesn’t even read that low.

Now that the snowpack has re-solidified, my depth has stabilized at 5”

Weatherjan – not the first or last time a temperature measurement has been discarded. The world heat record set back in 1922 was also dismissed…granted it took decades to make the decision-

12z runs continue to ‘sneak’ this low a bit farther north. Jill and I are looking at the radar in Texas and Oklahoma. A burst of snow this morning down here wasn’t properly caught well by the NAM. The precip is about 25-50 miles farther north than the 12z estimates.

In other words, we’re confident this system swings north a bit further than even the latest 12z runs, bringing perhaps 2-4” from the Mohawk Valley south. Jill is working on the snow map now…we’ll post details in a bit.

We’ve seen this trend before (the snow before New Years). Considering this system is such a fast mover, it won’t get the opportunity to drop a whole lot of snow even with the last second jog to the north.

This system really screws up the LES for Thursday. Winds turn sharply to the north now. I would of rather took my chances with the lake effect.

    Getting some light snow here.

26 degrees, light breeze, light snow started falling here within the last hour. So far only a light coating on the ground.

24 degrees, light breeze and steady light to moderate snow falling. A good coating on the ground.

Pretty good burst of snow in New England this morning. As for us, it looks like we have to rely on the tail end of this event.

1/2” – 1” of overnight snow reported in southern Otsego County too.

  15. Nick (West Winfield,NY):

28 degrees here with mod. snow falling, little over a dusting on the ground now.
Will have a measurement after school.

Dusting on the ground here. Another sneaky storm on Friday is trending north now too. Big hit for NC/VA. NAM has it close to the New England coast now.

still getting moderate snow here…just a little over a dusting as well….25*

  18. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

So far so good on the forecasting end. 0.75” here on Smith Hill with several 1” reports across Otsego County. Highest number was 2” in Cedarville.

The snow quality is slick – the higher water content is causing some issues on the roadways across Otsego County. I expect road conditions to improve over the next few hours.

Next week’s arctic airmass doesn’t look as strong on this mornings models. Also shows a strong western runner towards the end of the week.

If Euro is right Tuesday and Wednesday we’ll be stuck in the single digits for highs. Hopefully we get lucky on LES Sunday but winds look pretty strong.
