Moving Right Along

Elevation made all the difference across Central New York over the past 12 hours as a weak storm system affected our weather.  Here at the television station (800 feet above the valley floor) a slushy 0.8” of snow accumulated on grass, trees, sidewalks and roadways through the evening.  In the lowest spots of the city of Utica, a rain/snow mix was prevalent, with just a tiny bit of slush and mainly on grassy surfaces.

That weather system is now moving northeastward through Canada.  Behind the storm, the air isn't all that much colder.  In fact, temperatures through much of today (Friday) will remain above the freezing mark with likely just some scattered sprinkles or flurries.

Winds will gradually turn westerly through the day and by this evening align over Lake Ontario.  Temperatures aloft will likely be marginally cold enough to produce some lake effect snow showers and flurries this evening and overnight.  As the air near the surface cools below the freezing mark, we could see localized accumulations of a coating to an inch or two across the area through tonight.

For Saturday another weak trough of low pressure is slated to arrive in the afternoon and evening with another round of snow showers.  Again it appears that the higher elevations stand the best chance of picking up an inch or two of accumulation.  Part of the reason we’ve been dealing with so many elevation-dependent snowfalls this early in the season is a lack of appreciable snow cover for much of our area.  Couple that with a sun angle that gets higher every day and the lowest level of the atmosphere (called the ‘boundary layer’) warms up far more readily than if a snowpack were around.

Whatever falls Saturday shouldn't last long as the weak weather wave scoots away Saturday evening.

It still appears at the time of this writing that Sunday's coastal storm will stay south and east of our area, but of course it bears watching and we'll keep you up to speed right here on the blog and on WKTV.

I had the same temperature trend as Gordon — yesterday was strange, with snow all day, then changing to rain after dark. Exactly the opposite of what I expected.

  23. Jill Reale (Utica):

The snow squall has fallen apart for Utica and points north. As for Madison and Otsego County, looks like moderate to heavy snow.

  24. Art (Oriskany Falls):

The temp here is 37 degrees and it’s been trying to snow here for an hour or so.
It’s snowing but can’t stick because of the temp, I guess.
The other morning here (Maybe Thursday Morning) the temp was 34 degrees and it didn’t look like snow at all. At 7:30 AM we got a 1/2 inch of that there real fine pellet snow in 3 minutes and it stuck. It stopped snowing after the 3 minutes.
Everything was white in 3 minutes including the roads.
I’m surprised that it isn’t raining right now.
From what I gather by the radar it looks like Oswego and points North are really getting hammered right now, and just maybe it isn’t even snowing in Utica.
