April will go into the books as a "middle of the road" type of month. The average monthly temperature was 46.68 degrees, or 1.88 degrees above the 30-year average. Precipitation was 3.75", slightly above average. Snowfall, for the third month in a row, came in below average with 0.7" total for the month. Incidentally, after having been a full two feet above average to date with snowfall in January, our seasonal snowfall total of 94.2" came in slightly below average. That just shows what a difference there was between the first half of Winter '08-'09 and the latter half.
Moving on now. The cold front responsible for the showers and thunderstorms late today is expected to slowly push to the south by later tonight and then stall in the Mid-Atlantic over the weekend. At the same time, dry and cooler weather will try to work in from Canada - with some success. Still, the front will remain close by and as waves of low pressure ride along it, some extra clouds will sneak into the forecast. There is also the chance of an odd sprinkle or two, especially across the southern reaches of the viewing area. Most of the weekend looks dry at this point with daytime temps near 60 degrees.
Our computer models have not been very consistent about next week's forecast. At this time it appears that the weather will again turn cool and unsettled by the middle portion of the week as a storm system tracks northwest of the area and throws some warm-advect type or overrunning rainfall our way. We may bust into some warmer temperatures with the chance of some thunderstorms by the end of the week. Even though it is too early to give specifics, and the threat won't occur before sometime next week at the earliest, it's only a matter of time before active thunderstorms find their way into CNY! We'll keep you posted as conditions warrant!

Rob (Whitesboro):
Well the growing season started in my backyard yesterday. I took a chance and planted my garden early this year. There doesn’t appear to be any “killer” frost in the long range. Usually I don’t plant untill the 15th or so. Unless you live in the valley I wouldn’t take a chance yet.

Rob, I was watching that develop this morning, very interesting, got me excited for severe weather season. The average frost for Utica is May 8th, so the Mohawk Valley should be safe. Outlying areas may have a chance to be near the freezing mark next weekend for overnight lows.

Where’s the sun??? Any chance of this pattern breaking up so we can have sunshine instead of overcast and rainy every two days? We haven’t had a nice FULL week since Spring Break!

MG,
We’ll catch some sunshine tomorrow, but it’s going to be tough this week. It’s a very active pattern, with shortwave after shortwave zipping through the area. May is the month where we see a significant improvement in the sun department. The sunniest part of the year is June and July.

It is looking like the rain is going to miss us for the day. National radar is not showing too much in the way of precipitation heading into our neck of the woods. The winds are remaining calm as well. Any insight into this at WKTV (updates?)?

Adam Musyt:
Randy,
Today’s storm obviously kept most of the moisture to the east, except for some very light showers and sprinkles. Tonight’s batch of rain should follow a similar path, perhaps brushing the eastern half of the viewing area (especially east of NY-12) with a couple of showers.
A better bet for rain will arrive tomorrow night.
