Central New York will see it's first major winter storm of the season today. Snow will continue develop as we head through the morning and into the afternoon. The heaviest snow is still expected to fall later today. Several inches of snow will be on the ground for the evening commute. We expect the worst weather and driving conditions to be between 3pm-7pm today.
The snow today will be similar to the snow that fell during the last storm. It will be a wet and heavy. The heavier snow will make it more difficult to shovel and drive.
Total accumulations will range widely. Elevation and location will be key to how much snow you can expect in your backyard. The highest totals will fall south of Utica, especially on the hilltops (elevations over 1500 feet). The snows here will be fluffier, and totals here should exceed one foot. This area also has the least chance to mix with other precipitation types. Most of the snow will fall on the front end of the storm. Mixed precipitation may become an issue as we head into tonight.
Sleet and even rain are still on the table. Our eyes will be on what happens to the east of CNY, as the warm conveyor belt of air is expected to arrive in Eastern NY today. This warm air will drive all the way into Central and Northern New York. We could lose a lot on the tail end of the storm. Still, even with this potential changeover, several inches of snow will fall regardless during the day today.
Winds will pick up and become sustained between 15-30mph tonight, with higher gusts on the hilltops. This will create some blowing and drifting snow (with heavy snow, not as much as in other events), but also some other issues as well. The wet snow combined with the wind adds to the potential for scattered power outages. This is something we have to follow as the day progresses, and we'll keep you posted with the latest.
As with any storm, we'll continue to monitor the situation and keep you informed throughout the day. Please post snowfall totals, road conditions, and anything else relavent to this storm that other folks may want to be aware of. Thanks!

Most of the heavy snows will fall during the daylight hours today. I think 80-90% of our accumulation will be done by say 9pm tonight. Not good to get this all at once. Traveling conditions will continue to deteriorate as we head into the day today.

This is a good read from BGM and something we completely agree on…
BUT ANOTHER CONCERN WITH SNOW AMOUNTS IS BNDRY LAYER TEMPS DURING THE DAY TODAY BEFORE THE HEAVIER SNOW KICKS IN. VALLEY LOCATIONS LIKELY WILL BE SLIGHTLY ABOVE FREEZING AND WITH THE STRGR LATE FEB SUN...LIGHT SNOWFALL WILL NOT ACCUMULATE MUCH. THIS CUD CUT DOWN AMNTS FOR VALLEY LOCATIONS SOME. WILL ADDRESS IN GRIDS USING ELEVATION SMART TOOLS. ANTHR FACTOR THAT CUD CUT DOWN SNOW AMNTS SOME IS THE POTENTIAL FOR A LITTLE SLEET MIXING IN ACRS NC NY AND EVEN TO THE CATSKILLS. YES THAT IS RIGHT...OUR NORTHERN AND EASTERN ZONES CUD SEE A LITTLE WARM AIR SNEAK IN ARND 800 MB MIXING THE SNOW WITH SLEET DURG THE HEAVIEST PART OF THE SNOWSTORM BETWEEN 00Z AND 06Z. THIS IS A TESTAMENT TO HOW WOUND UP THIS CYCLONE IS PROJECTED TO BE…WARM AIR TO THE NORTH...COLDER AIR TO THE SOUTH. THIS WUD CERTAINLY CUT SNOW AMNTS DOWN A NOTCH IN THESE AREAS.

Rain being reported in Albany. Temperatures are going to be critical in keeping this snow around during the daylight hours. We need the snow to stay heavy in order to accumulate. Any break in the action will bump temperatures up a few degrees causing the snow to mix or possibly change over to rain. A nailbiter for sure.

The fact that it’s raining in Albany is a bad sign indeed for later today and tonight. It signals that the warm air is progressive, and it wouldn’t take much at all to bring that warm air west as the storm really starts to bomb out along the coast.

How’s the travel going to be this afternoon going from Cooperstown back to St. Johnsville. Pretty juicy commute this morning and the snow is getting more intense as we speek out here?

Bill Kardas (WKTV):
Shaun,
Tough. Heavy snow is going to continue through the afternoon. It’s only going to get worse as we continue into the day. Your toughtest part of the drive would be between Cooperstown and Starksville (if you take that way). I say that because it may mix in with rain showers though as you drive down into the Mohawk Valley.

Winds will start to pick up later today. Here is a look at the BUFKIT profile of wind speeds for tonight . The strongest winds occur between midnight and 7AM Friday. The higher elevations will see sustained winds of 20 to 40mph, possibly as high as 50mph on the highest hilltops (2000 feet above sea level…basically the Adirondacks). Winds will be less in the valleys, as a northeast wind is not a good wind producer for the lower elevations of Central New York.

No, in fact the orientation of the Mohawk Valley itself may allow warmer air to move quicker to the west. This concept is similar to the east wind, only warm air instead of cold air this time around.

12z NAM shows a faster moving storm. The heavy snows will arrive early this afternoon, and exit by later this evening. There’s a better shot that this precipitation will end shortly after the warm air arrives, so there may not be much sleet or rain to deal with tonight. The highest totals look to be in the Catskills, where over 16” of snow may fall.

New model runs keep the storm slightly farther east. That, coupled with the fact that the snows are keeping the temperature down in the middle of the day, the chance for any turnover is now much lower. We’ll keep an eye on what happens in Albany but like we’ve said all morning long…as long as the snow stays intense it won’t change over to rain.

Working in Utica…it all depends on the snow ratio. If the air was colder, the ratios would be higher (colder air=fluffier snow). This is also a nor’easter, meaning that snow ratios aren’t going to be as high as say lake effect. In a cold nor’easter (middle of January) snow ratios are about 50% higher than they are in this kind of event.

Good afternoon!
Latest data still points to heavy snowfall continuing through this evening until shortly after midnight. The newest run of the WRF shows our storm system displaced about 100 miles northeast of what the model was showing last evening. This is going to have repercussions on our forecast. Because of this northeastward jog, the rain/sleet chances have pretty much been extinguished for most of our viewing area. It was pretty close though – Albany has had rain all afternoon from the onshore flow. This was our big concern when putting our forecast together.
With several hours of precipitation remaining and with the idea of the mixed precipitation further east, we’re going to be nudging our snowfall forecast numbers up just a bit.
Roads are a mess. And the tree limbs are starting to sag too. As the winds kick up this evening, power outages are going to become a concern.

Rob, are you in the village or on the hills? I have not been measuring but I would guess about 6 inches so far off of main st. It is some heavy stuff too, I’ve been trying to get out and shovel every 3 hours or so, seems like about 2 inches each time. everyone make sure you take it easy shoveling, we don’t need any sad stories. I would assume the news will probably have a story about that tonight?

As of 4 PM, I have recieved 5” even since midnight. That gives me 5.1” from the first small storm monday night. 3” even from the medium storm on Tuesday night, and 5” so far from the “Big” storm today. Snow has been light all day with just an occassional moderate snowfall from time to time. Current temperature is 32.8. I just measured 6” of undisturbed snow on the hood of my tractor. This of course has settled (packed over time) I know we got more then that. Just drove from Cooperstown (Bassett Hospital) through Hartwick over to New Lisbon. The roads are treacherous and very dangerous. RT 28 south to Oneonta is a circus ring with traffic crawling. County roads are the worst I have seen all winter. Snowing very hard at times. Without 4 wheel drive I would have never made it.
One thing I have observed while shoveling is that the snow is not as wet as yesterdays snow. In fact it seems to be fluffy now.

Hi folks, Just thought I would throw in my 2 cents here. There is 8 inches outside my door of actually a heavy but less water snow than 2 days ago. Still very heavy to shovel but much less water if you all know what I mean. If it keeps up at this rate, about 1/2 to 1” per hour, we will easily exceed a foot . Still no wind though. I am so stuck here. I went out to plow it a couple of hours ago and dlid off the driveway into a drainage ditch I have here. That snow is seriously slick as well. Be careful driving folks. I can just imagine what the roads must be like.

Down to 30 degrees now at Griffiss. The lower the temperature goes, the better it gets for our odds of avoiding power outages. Unfortunately, if our temps go much lower then blowing and drifting becomes a bigger concern.
We don’t expect the temperature to drop much more than a couple of degrees through the night. If anything it may rise a bit by daybreak.

In short, it looks like a mess. The steady snows should taper off some by daybreak, but with many locations on that route seeing upwards of a foot and a half of accumulation, traveling is going to be quite tough to say the least.
