January thaw continues....

The sun broke free of the clouds and really helped bump up temperatures this afternoon for most areas.  Here's a look at the high temperatures across the area this afternoon:

Location High
Oneonta 52
Schenevus 51
Laurens 51
Cooperstown 50
Marcy 49
Westmoreland 47
Roseboom 47
Washington Mills 46
Old Forge 46
Rome 45
Oriskany 45
Dolgeville 43
Little Falls 39

The majority of the area turned out quite mild today, with the exception of the Mohawk Valley east of Herkimer.  Cold air drainage off the Adirondacks.  It will happen in these areas again tomorrow.  For the rest of us though, we won't have any issues staying mild. Temperatures stay above freezing tonight with clouds and fog developing.  A mild but cloudy start to the day on Sunday as an area of low pressure slides to our west.  Light rain showers are likely, especially north and west of Utica Sunday afternoon.  Highs will climb into the 50s for most areas.

Cooler air is on tap starting Monday.  A cold front swinging through will knock down temperatures throughout the afternoon.  SKies will gradually clear out late Monday and Monday night.  Partly sunny skies to return by Tuesday as high pressure takes over.

The end of the week looks seasonably chilly.  Another cold front will give us an opportunity for lake effect snow showers, but it looks like the core of the arctic air with that front will stay north of CNY.

Hit 59 today where I am. Says 57 was high at Rochester airport. All the snow here is gone except some snowbanks

  2. Tom (Richfield Springs):

38 degrees, calm, foggy. No new snow this week, but a lot of old snow is gone.

  3. Norm (Floyd, NY):

    40 * here this morning.

Snow in melting fast. Patches of green appearing.
    Does this mean SPRING?

  4. Denys (East Winfield):

39 degrees, calm and foggy. Same here Tom. No new snow, and green spots all over my yard.

  5. nugfin (Neil) (South Utica - Genesee St.):

Partly cloudy with some light fog at 38* here.

    ...41°... & lite rain …

  7. Gary (Schuyler):

When one lives in Central NY, they adapt to winter by skiing, snowboarding, snowmibiling ice fishing etc… With last winter a dud, and this one somewhat of an under acheiver so far, I decided to check out Winnipeg, Manitoba’s wx on Wunderground.com That’s a city of 750,000, about 100 miles north of the Minn. border. They’re avg. temperatures this time of year range from a high of 7 and a low of -5. No January thaw in Winnepeg. (One has to put in Winnipeg, CANADA) to get it’s info.

January thaws are not new here, I remember them as a kid (and that’s a few years back!)

  8. nugfin (Neil) (South Utica - Genesee St.):

    Right now:

    Erie, PA: 66*
    Buffalo: 62*
    Rochester: 52*
    Syracuse: 45*
    My House: 39*

Almost a 30* difference over a span of only 200 miles

Posted January 13th at 8:16 AM

  9. Art (Oriskany Falls):

It was right around 40* here for many hours.
Right now the temp. is 45* here.
The Snow is melting nicely and I notice there is not as much run off water as I thought there would be.
Must Be, Not a lot of frost in the ground.
There is still enough Snow left here to cause problems though.

Very foggy on Smith Hill this morning. I was in Syracuse yesterday for the basketball game. It was sunny with temperatures in the mid 50s. There isn’t snow to be found on the Cuse campus, just green grass.

Posted January 13th at 8:42 AM

  11. Rob (Whitesboro):

Temp here is 42 degrees. Snowpack is toast. Not even 2” left.

Posted January 13th at 10:20 AM

  12. Anthony (Oriskany 565 ft.):

Not much snow left here. Doesn’t look like we will get to the 50s at this rate.

Posted January 13th at 10:44 AM

  13. Jimmy (New Hartford):

    Snowpack here is officially dead.

Posted January 13th at 11:28 AM

  14. Rob (Whitesboro):

Still looks like we’ll be getting our snow pack back Thursday. Should have a decent squall line moving through here and the GFS is still advertising a significant LES event through Friday.

Posted January 13th at 11:44 AM

  15. Rob (Whitesboro):

Wow up to 65 now in Buffalo. Watertown and Syracuse are at 60 with dews in the 50’s! It’s 47 here.

Posted January 13th at 12:12 PM

  16. Matt (Rochester):

    I have 68 here. Amazing

Posted January 13th at 12:59 PM

  17. nugfin (Neil) (South Utica - Genesee St.):

Temp has just jumped up to 54* here.

Posted January 13th at 1:10 PM

  18. Adam Musyt:

RME ASOS (Griffiss) just shot up to 50 at the 1:00 observation.

It’s no 68, but a “winter warm up” CNY style :)

Posted January 13th at 1:18 PM

  19. Adam Musyt:

Local dew point is up to 46 as well. Feels like an “April showers” kinda day.

Posted January 13th at 1:20 PM

  20. Adam Musyt:

Incidentally those dew point numbers in the 40’s over snow pack make for a perfect early morning dense fog setup with local visibilities reduced to zero.

With rapidly melting snow thanks to warm temperatures and high RH values, the saturated air near the ground just sits there as the snow melts ever more efficiently. The fog has little chance to be whisked away until higher level winds can help. This is more likely to occur during the day or when a cold front approaches.

  21. Adam Musyt:

    One more interesting stat…

    It’s 59 degrees at Syracuse!

Posted January 13th at 1:30 PM

  22. Matt (Rochester):

Adam, I am not that excited about it being 68. It’s false hope.

Posted January 13th at 1:36 PM

  23. Adam Musyt:

22 – Well we all know its not going to last. I say we just enjoy it while its here :)

Posted January 13th at 1:37 PM

  24. unwildgirl (Richfield Springs):

50 degrees here and people still out on what little ice there is on Canadarago lake

Posted January 13th at 1:46 PM

  25. Koz (Ilion):

Just came back from Barneveld where it was 55 degrees and sunny, back here in Ilion it’s still 43 and cloudy

Posted January 13th at 2:22 PM

  26. Rob (Whitesboro):

Snowpack is is officially gone here now…or at least where I measure. Still a lot of drifts and large snowbanks. My high is 50 degrees so far.

Posted January 13th at 3:19 PM

  27. Lori (Bridgeport):

High of 59 here today…..this is nothing but a spring teaser !!... An early start to cleaning up dog bombs !!

Posted January 13th at 5:15 PM

  28. Jill Reale (Utica):

Once again, areas in the eastern Mohawk Valley barely saw temperatures out of the upper 30s today. Buffalo made it to 65°! Rain doesn’t arrive until late tonight and will be long gone by mid morning. Time to say goodbye to spring…

Posted January 13th at 6:13 PM

  29. Jeff H (Sherburne Hills):

Super Duper foggy weekend…..the temperature sure didn’t jump as high as I thought but snow is mostly gone and roof and driveway are now completely free of snow and ice. Not sure if its updating this week but here’s the numbers anyway.

    Seasonal snowfall 48.5”
    Weekly snowfall 0.2”

Posted January 13th at 8:46 PM

  30. Michael (Dolgeville):

Seasonal Snowfall total here is 23.26” inches. Snowpack took a major beating but not nearly as bad as it could have been. I would estimate there still being 70-75% coverage in the village still.

Posted January 13th at 9:42 PM

  31. Gordon (Northwestern):

52.2” of snow for the season. Only 1.2” for the week, and that was early last Monday morning. High of 46 today. Only 5” of snowpack left. Probably the rain tonight will take a good chunk of that away.

Posted January 13th at 10:46 PM

  32. Denys (East Winfield):

47 degrees, overcast with a light breeze. It’s beautiful out!

Posted January 14th at 5:05 AM

  33. Tom (Richfield Springs):

still 46 degrees here, light wind, overcast, only a trace of rain during the night. Most of the ground is bare, the only snow is the dirty piles left by the plows.

Posted January 14th at 5:07 AM

  34. Nick (West Winfield,NY):

    42 degrees here this morning.

Posted January 14th at 6:39 AM

  35. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

You know you live in Central New York when the passage of a cold front spikes the temperature. Areas in the eastern Mohawk Valley who missed out on the warm weather this weekend are finally seeing temperatures in the low to mid 40s this morning.

Be aware that heavy snow melt has caused ponding on the roadways. Thankfully, this will not freeze today, as temperatures stay above freezing. Some black ice issues develop tonight, but hopefully most of the water evaporates before freezing again.

6z DGEX was interesting for later this week…I know its the DGEX but I still find interesting.

Posted January 14th at 10:51 AM

  37. Rob (Whitesboro):

GFS is interesting too. Showing accumalating snow for Wednesday now.

Posted January 14th at 11:05 AM

  38. Lori (Bridgeport):

no ice fishing here !....Lake opened up over night ….center is wide open and its working its way to shore…..temp has been going down all morning…down to 37 now.

Posted January 14th at 11:21 AM

  39. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

00z NAM was hinting at a glancing shot of snow on Wednesday – now both 12z runs of the NAM & GFS have the edge of the precip in CNY. We’ll have to watch this one, as it has the potential to bring light snow to the area, especially south of the Mohawk Valley.

Posted January 14th at 12:05 PM

  40. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

Ironically the delay and failure of significantly cold air to arrive here is contributing to that northward trend. If the low intensifies further on the models over the next few runs, I’d expect that trend to continue north.

Posted January 14th at 12:26 PM

  41. Gordon (Northwestern):

Even though I’m still above freezing at 33 degrees, I guess the thaw is technically over. I went from 18” of snowpack down to 3” as of his evening. A few light snow flurries in the air this afternoon.
