From Lake Snow to Bitter Cold

The past twenty four hours featured the third round of significant lake effect snow in the last thirty days here in Central New York.  As is usual with lake effect, slippery road conditions and a wide range in snowfall accumulations have been reported across our area.

Here is a list of snowfall reports into the WKTV weather center through 11 PM Tuesday:

Late this evening the heaviest part of the band has pushed south of the valley onto a 300 degree compass orientation.  This band weakened considerably through the evening but is now showing a few signs of reenergizing over Lake Ontario.  It may yet produce another localized couple of inches of snow accumulation, especially west of Utica.  The snow will be fighting against a surface wind that will be weakening through the morning.  This coupled with a lowering inversion and a drying air mass will likely weaken the band and cause it to retreat back to areas closer to the Lake Ontario shore through the morning.  Still, the placement of the snow will be watched closely through the morning commute.

Very cold but quieter weather is likely for much of the next 24 to 48 hours. During the day Wednesday, highs will struggle to climb to even ten degrees.  In fact, for areas where skies clear out appreciably on Wednesday Night temperatures are likely to plummet well below zero.

There are some signs of a potential warm up by the beginning of next week.  Fingers crossed!  In the meantime stay warm and be careful on the area roadways.
