Drip drip drip...

The weather patterns over the next several days look pretty quiet.  High pressure building in to Central New York will bring us plenty of sunshine today, Saturday and Sunday.  Overnight lows tonight fall down into the teens, but highs on Saturday and Sunday will make a run at 40 degrees or better.

I encourage you to come out and participate or cheer for the runners and walkers in this year's Heart Run and Walk.  It should be a great day to get out and excercise.  The weather will be chilly in the morning, but the sunshine will make it feel warmer.  If you are walking or running, dress in layers.  WIth temperatures quickly warming up, you may find that the early gear is too much.  Also, sunglasses and sunscreen may not be a bad idea...the sun is strong this time of year.

The only thing on our plates over the next seven days is a cold front that will drop on from the north on Monday.  It will bring us clouds, snow, and rain showers along with slightly cooler temepratures.  The core of the cool air looks to impact New England and spare the brunt of Central New York.  Still, temperatures will cool off a tad for early next week.

The big story this week, with the lack of weather, is the melting snow.  The snowpack has diminished considerably over the past week.   Check out the contrast between the February 28th and March 5th snowpack across Central New York.  About 75% of our snowpack here in the Mohawk Valley has melted within a week.  Even the higher elevations took a big hit, with many spots losing around a foot of snow.

The snowmelt is a combination of both temperatures consistently above freezing this week along with the March sunshine.  More snowmelt will occur over the weekend.  With little snow in the forecast over the next seven days, the valley locations will likely begin to grass up.

Thankfully, this snow melt is occuring slowly, and with dry weather there ought not to be flooding.  March is known for flooding, and it looks like this is not going to be an issue for now.

Rick: No sir, i went last weekend after the big storm, and a lot of water spots, and very warm mid 30’s…now that a week went bye, deff even worse! Plus no snow on roads in the north country, cringe when i was riding on pavement!

So sad…too early to be in the 40’s. Hope we at least have one more big storm!! Come on Ol’ Man Winter….this is why we live in upstate NY.

Blogwatcher, The warmth we will see this weekend and the first part of next week will retreat for a little while. However, I just don’t see any real super cold air over us for the next two or three weeks. there will be storms, the southern Jet will be active next week. Also, there looks to be a big storm impacting the mid-Atlantic and Northeast around the 16-18 of march. Last week the models showed it to be a big snowstorm. However, right now I don’t know if that will be the case. It could be a rain maker in spots, especially for PA and other parts of the mid Atlantic. It’s too early to make any real predictions, time will tell.

Theres a hint of a possible storm new Friday. Winter’s last gasp?

  8. Gary Utica:

I didn’t expect it to be so gray and dark out there this morning with high pressure parked right over us.

  9. Jill Reale (Utica):

The weather over the next several days looks abnormally quiet for March. The air over us is so dry that even with a backdoor cold front Monday, it will only give us a few extra clouds in the sky. Our next chance for possible precipitation looks to be Thursday night into Friday with a warm front. It looks like the snowpack will continue to diminish this weekend and next week so get out and enjoy this amazing weather!

Last March was pretty much like this March. I do not believe we received more than an inch or two of snow last year for March.

The GFS 0z ends winter next weekend with a solid rain event. The GFS 6z prolongs winter with a possible rain to snow on the hill tops and maybe the valley…..........What does the KTV team think about those two?

  12. randy Vitullo :

The GFS 12z paints the “Winter is Over” scenario for next weekends storm. An all rain event. Bring on the warmth after next weekend…...

    Anyone,

Based on this winters patterns and years past… Is there any indication as to what kind of Spring/Summer we may have here in CNY?
Stormy? Hot &Dry? Hot & Wet? Cool & Dry?
    Cool & Wet?

Posted March 7th at 2:51 PM

  14. Becky (West Leyden):

Dave, Interesting question, if you ask ten different people you will get nine different answers. However, this is the way I see it, the blocking we’ve been experiencing this Winter will continual into the Spring; its influence will most likely cause the first part of Spring to be cooler and drier than normal.

Becky, are you a meteorologist ? You seem to know a lot and I enjoy reading your reports. Anyhow I was out on Canadarago Lake today ice fishing. Not too often do we get to do it in T shirts. It’s not too when you see motorcycles on the road and the snowmobiles crossing the same road too.

  16. Jill Reale (Utica):

The extended forecast isn’t looking good for anyone who wants to hold onto Winter. The storm system on Fri-Sun looks very mild with 850s jumping between +4 and +6. Friday looks to be all rain and well as Saturday. With temperatures in the 40s and a strong March sun, most of the snowpack in the around Utica will be gone by the end of the week. That is good news if we see mostly rain next weekend, since it will diminish flooding problems. We will have to keep an eye on the North Country as we head towards next weekend. Many areas across NY hit 50 degrees + today. Albany/Glens Falls hit 50°, Elmira 53°, JFK 58°, Poughkeepsie 55°. We hit 45° while Buffalo only got to 36° thanks to a strong lake breeze.

  17. Jill Reale (Utica):

Things look to remain well above north to our neighbors to the north, so with no “real” cold air to tap into, we are going to have trouble seeing the chances of accumulating snow in the near future.

Clifford, I got hooked on weather ( especially severe weather) right after the tornado hit Boonville back in 1983. I don’t hold a degree in meteorology. However, I took a few classes when I was getting my Masters. I have picked up a lot of knowledge from books , essays, and papers. Over the years, I have ran into several meteorologist who were willing to take the time and teach me a thing or two. Also, the few times I’ve been Storm Chasing I’ve been very lucky to be around very talented individuals who taught me a lot.

I love what the extended forecast is showing, bring on spring!!

  21. Jill Reale (Utica):

My initial thoughts on Spring (at least early spring) is that El Nino will still play a role in the jet stream even though it is projected to weaken. So that means that we will still see some blocking in the atmosphere. That being said I think we may see slightly above normal temperatures and slightly drier (same trend as most of the winter) for at least March and beginning of April. Main areas for potential rain looks to be the Mid Atlantic once again. The big question is as we head toward summer is if El Nino weakens considerably or completely vanishes.

Updated snowfall totals. That was one of the easiest weeks to update so far this season. Very little snow to speak of over the past seven days and looks like this will continue. Next storm a rain maker even in the higher elevations.

I believe I am unchanged as well. I am unable to get into COCORAHS to verify it though. Anyone else having issues logging in?

I just got back on Cocorahs, I did have an inch on last Monday, so my total for the season is one inch more then last week!

Still got 4” left here for snow. It’s that hard crusty stuff that doesn’t like to melt too fast. Looks like the GOM is open for business with this next system. I HATE the mud season! Only made it up to 40 here today which seems a bit low.

Posted March 8th at 10:02 PM

  37. randy Vitullo :

This is the beginning of the earliest mud season since 2000; and another early one in 1991 or 1992. I hate early demises…....Still anywhere from 6 to 12 on the ground in the fields and woods in HP. Trails should hold until Saturday or Sunday.. Sigh….
