A BIG THANK YOU to those that checked in this morning.  Like I mentioned yesterday, I do apologize if I didn't get to your reports.  It's quite a task sifting through all the data.  Feel free to post the information below.

More perspective...

Yesterday we talked about the frequency of bitter cold temperatures in CNY.  Today, lets talk about low temperatures.  We set the coldest low temperature at Griffiss for the winter last night at -14°.  How does that stack up compared to other years?  Have a look at the past 3 winters...

Coldest temperature vs year:
-14 in 2013 (so far)
-15 in 2012 (the winter that wasn't still managed to get cold)
-21 in 2011
-13 in 2010

In order to really get a bearing on the 'average coldest temperature of the winter', we'd have to go back through 30 years of data.  I'd estimate that number would be somewhere around -12 degrees give or take a few (2006-2009 was not all that cold).  So, this cold snap does fall in line with the climate of our region.

Going forward...

We're in the freezer box for today, tonight, and early tomorrow before things begin to improve.  I think tonight will be another repeat of last night, with clear skies and bitterly cold conditions.  Friday's high finally brings us out of the single digits to the teens.  By next week, temperatures will actually climb above freezing, with the potential for rain in the forecast too.  We shall see!

  4. Matt (Rochester):

I got down to 7 last night. Does that count, lol. Maybe as one of the warmest places North of I-88. Been snowing here all morning, not showing on radar on the buffalo radar and have picked up about 5 inches.

  5. Gary (Schuyler):

It’s been cold the past couple mornings, but as a kid, January 1968 sticks out in my mind as the longest and coldest cold snap in my lifetime anyway. Official low temperatures from Oneida County Airport I believe at the time were in excess of -20 for several days. I was working on farms between school at that time in my life and a lot breakdowns occured due to the cold snapping chains and mechanical parts. It was a tough week if I recall.

  6. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

Griffiss did hit -15 by the way. We should do it again tonight with the same general conditions. This is called a ‘persistence’ forecast by the way…and it should work quite well tonight if we can keep clouds out of the picture.

  7. MikeP (Springfield Center ):

i had -7 at 7:48 this morning. it is 6.5 out now. the wind has picked dropping the windchill to well below 0 (-10 to -18) -18 being the coldest so far today

  13. Adam Musyt:

Shallow, low-topped flurries have arrived here at the station this evening. The activity is so low to the ground that its literally flying below the radar.

Ground obs show similar conditions back to Syracuse. Its tough to tell how extensive the flurries are, but if they persist for a while tonight we aren’t going to get as cold as last night.

Just another one of those quirky things about winter in CNY :)

Posted January 24th at 7:26 PM

  14. Adam Musyt:

1/4 inch of VERY fluffy snow accumulation on the hill here (and it looked to be about the same in North Utica).

Flurries seem to be drifting southward. Moon is shining again here and we’re back down to 6 degrees at the station after spiking to 9 a couple of hours ago.

  15. Adam Musyt:

Skies cleared out at RME and temperatures fell from 8 to 0 between 8 PM and 9 PM.

Cloudiness makes all the difference on nights like tonight.

  16. karij (cold brook):

This cold is bad, frozen pipes, looking forward to a little warm up even. Sure would rather have snow than this!

  17. nugfin (Neil) (South Utica - Genesee St.):

Still getting some light snow here and funny enough, currently at my high for the day at 10*

Posted January 24th at 9:58 PM

  18. Rob (Whitesboro):

Can see the moon now here. Picked up 0.6” of fluff. Just enough to make the roads bad again.

Posted January 24th at 10:11 PM

  19. Rob (Whitesboro):

Doesn’t look like we’re going to go below zero tonight. Winds picked up quite a bit. Even where it cleared out it’s still around zero.

Posted January 25th at 2:30 AM

  20. Tom (Richfield Springs):

3 degrees, overcast, light wind, 0.1” of new snow, better than yesterday morning.

Posted January 25th at 5:04 AM

  21. Denys (East Winfield):

1 degree, overcast with a light coating of new snow on the ground.

Posted January 25th at 5:23 AM

  22. Matt (Rochester):

Saranac Lake bottomed out at -16. Well above the -30 forecasted for them this morning.

Posted January 25th at 6:06 AM

  23. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

It’s amazing what a few clouds and a breeze can do to a perfectly good forecast :)

Clouds are already racing in from the west, so even if the low clouds do break up this morning, I think most of the day will be cloudy. All models keep the snow very light…less than 0.10” of QPF meaning about an inch of fluff. Most of this looks to fall in the evening.

Posted January 25th at 6:26 AM

  24. nugfin (Neil) (South Utica - Genesee St.):

A dusting of snow overnight. Got down to 1* but now up to 2*

Posted January 25th at 6:43 AM

  25. sue (fairfield):

    -3 here so far

Posted January 25th at 6:58 AM

  26. MG (Point Rock):

Just a flurry here last night. Low of -5, a 16 degree improvement over yesterday.

Posted January 25th at 8:02 AM

  27. sue (fairfield):

    low of -4

Posted January 25th at 8:37 AM

  28. Rob (Whitesboro):

Low here was zero. Snowpack is 5.0”.

Posted January 25th at 9:53 AM

  29. Winter (Forestport):

minus 17° was last nights low temperature … It is minus 6° presently ... Cold Snap !!!

Posted January 25th at 9:58 AM

  30. Rob (Whitesboro):

Well if the GFS is right we’re going to lose our snowpack again next week. LES behind it looks much better as cold air isn’t as brutal.

Posted January 25th at 11:45 AM

  31. nugfin (Neil) (South Utica - Genesee St.):

Yup, looks like 40’s for Tuesday/Wednesday. The end of the week looks interesting if that wave rides up behind the cold front and then LES.

Posted January 25th at 12:25 PM

  32. Rob (Whitesboro):

We’ll see…the Euro has been much cooler. But our snowpack is pure fluff. Probably only 0.10” for a SWE.

Posted January 25th at 12:46 PM

  33. MG (Point Rock):

The whole month of January has been dry. I’m pretty well under 2” of liquid precip, which is less than half normal for the month. I hope we’re not looking at another summer of low groundwater levels. But only time will tell.

Posted January 25th at 2:29 PM

  34. sue (fairfield):

    high of 13 today

Posted January 25th at 4:53 PM

  35. Rob (Whitesboro):

Picked up 1.0” of snow this evening.

Posted January 25th at 9:01 PM

  36. Rob (Whitesboro):

Cold air still hanging tough on the NAM for Sun ngt/Monday. Widespread 3-6” before the brief thaw.

Posted January 25th at 10:11 PM

  37. Adam Musyt:

0.3” here at the station. Snow is just about over for now.

Posted January 25th at 10:17 PM

  38. Rob (Whitesboro):

Driving home from work the last few nights were as bad as it gets. I’d rather drive in a 6”+ storm than this stuff. 840 was dangerous.

Posted January 25th at 10:39 PM

  39. Adam Musyt:

Yeah. It’s important to remind everyone that after three subzero nights (or very close to it) the snow has no problem sticking to the roads, even if its only an inch or less. Also the anti-skid materials don’t work as well when temperatures fall below 15.

Posted January 25th at 11:02 PM

  40. Tom (Richfield Springs):

3 degrees, light wind, mostly overcast, .3” of new snow.

Posted January 26th at 5:10 AM

  41. weatherjan-Oneida (Oneida):

snow falling on a dry very cold road with no residual salt/brine will not “stick” or adhere to the road. Action of the vehicles creates a open lane.

Posted January 26th at 7:12 AM

  42. Denys (East Winfield):

-4 degrees, clear and calm. All the branches on the trees look like crystal. Beautiful!

Posted January 26th at 7:46 AM

  43. Jill Reale (Utica):

Temperatures just fell over the last half hour, to -4° at Griffiss Park.

Posted January 26th at 7:48 AM

  44. Brian (Lairdsville):

4th morning in a row starting out below zero. I don’t remember that happening recently.

Posted January 26th at 7:57 AM

  45. nugfin (Neil) (South Utica - Genesee St.):

-3* for a low here with 0.5” of new snow.

Posted January 26th at 8:08 AM

  46. Jill Reale (Utica):

The last time we had 4 days in a row starting out below zero was in January 2009. There actually was 3 days in a row in January 2012 that started out below zero.

Posted January 26th at 8:10 AM

  47. sue (fairfield):

    -7 here overnight….0 now
