The storm acted just as we thought going into the event, with general snowfall amounts between 6-10”.  Temperatures tonight are quickly falling due to the light winds, fresh snowfall and clear skies. Overnight lows once again will fall back below zero tonight into early tomorrow morning. The cold will not last very long though as the winds shift to the south tomorrow, pushing in some milder air.

The storm across the Midwest that is causing heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions will push northeast into the Great Lakes tomorrow into tomorrow night. Clouds increase Sunday night but temperatures will continue to fall below the freezing mark. With the onset of precipitation to arrive late Sunday night into Monday, there is a chance for freezing rain Monday morning. Because precipitation is light, we are not expecting a major icing event but a light glaze is possible before the switch over to rain by the afternoon. We will keep an eye on the situation over the next day to see if anything changes. Behind the storm system, lake effect snow is possible Tuesday across the Tug Hill with the potential for more snow Thursday-Saturday. Looks like another busy week ahead for CNY.

On another note, we are officially at 61.5” for seasonal snowfall today, which is only 3.9” below the normal for today.

YIKES! I know the 06z run of the GFS is usually pretty clownish, but it’s showing 24.4 inches of snow Sunday for Utica area.

  51. Rob (Whitesboro):

Still freezing drizzle here at 30 degrees.

Posted February 11th at 8:55 AM

  52. Justin (North Utica):

i know its pretty far in advance, but does there look to be some sort of storm brewing for this weekend?

Posted February 11th at 11:16 AM

  53. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

Justin – there are two potential systems to watch this week – one on Thursday, the other on Saturday. Both storm systems on paper are heading out to sea based on the 12z data, but it’s not practical to take that information verbatim – too far out into the future as far as I’m concerned. Plus, my priority today is how the rest of today & tonight unfolds…

We still have residual effects of this morning’s ice to worry about. Temperatures are still below freezing in the cold pockets of CNY – eastern Mohawk Valley and Adirondacks. There’s no obvious sign of more precipitation heading our way for the afternoon, but as we saw this morning, you can’t always trust the radar. In this environment, topography helps to generate precipitation when the atmosphere is completely saturated at the lower levels. IOW drizzle and freezing drizzle will be possible for the next several hours.

Also, lake enhanced snow tonight could generate 2-4” of snowfall or more north of the Mohawk Valley tonight. While not ‘exciting’ based on recent winter weather standards, it will once again impact tomorrow morning’s commute.

Posted February 11th at 11:36 AM

  54. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

Most areas have finally climbed above freezing – ice is melting off our tower. Looks like a dreary day ahead. The sun was nice while it lasted this weekend!

Posted February 11th at 12:29 PM

  55. nugfin (Neil) (South Utica - Genesee St.):

Bright blue skies out here in Oneida – temp is at 43*

Posted February 11th at 12:32 PM

  56. WKTV Weather Alert:

NWS has issued a Lake Effect Snow Advisory for Northern Oneida County until 12:00 PM

Posted February 11th at 3:35 PM

  57. Bill Kardas (WKTV):

Wow! I can’t believe how much snow we lost today over just a few short hours of sunshine! My base was 8” on Saturday but is now only 3”. Even some grassy spots are showing up where the dog has been running around. The February sun is getting stronger day by day.

Posted February 11th at 4:08 PM

  58. nugfin (Neil) (South Utica - Genesee St.):

High of 46* here today…also lost quite a bit of snowpack.
