Big Storm Moving In...

Posted December 15th, 2007 by Bill Kardas. 573 comments

We made some big changes to the forecast here over the past couple of shifts, and we'd like to offer a further explaination as to what we're anticipating now and why we think differently from many other sources.

First of all, please keep in mind some ground rules already established in one of our other entries.

A couple of other things worth mentioning before we dive into the forecast. Our snowfall forecast takes us into tomorrow evening. We do expect some additional snowfall after that, but we didn't include that in this forecast due to low confidence in what will happen tomorrow night. Keep that in mind. Alright, onto the forecast...

Tonight:
Doppler radar showing precipitation overspread the region now. For a few hours, this wasn't reaching the ground, but we are now getting reports that this precipitation reaching the ground. Heavy snow will start to crank in between midnight and 7AM. This is what the 12z NAM is showing for 7AM tomorrow. The key to that graphic is where the 540mb line is (the blue dashed line). As long as that line stays south of Utica, we stay snow. That's not gonna happen though.

Tomorrow

Up until 12z, we stay snow, but then a strong push of mild air makes it into the region. The 18z sounding from the NAM clearly show's a warm air intrusion. There's no doubt that if this verifies we change over to sleet. So why is this happening? Warm air is being wrapped around from the parent inland low. There's also a component of warm tropical air mixing in to this system as well. By the morning, we all change over to sleet. By the late morning, sleet will be the predominate precipitation type everywhere, even in the Adirondacks. Check out the 18z surface map . The 540 line is in NORTHERN NEW YORK. It's hard to keep plugging snow when you see something like that.

We get another shot of snow on the backside of this one. At this point in time, we aren't sure how this is going to play out because of model disagreements. The deformation zone could setup anywhere between here and Buffalo. That's quiet a range of variablility, and it's entirely possible we can pick up several inches of snow on the back end of this. For now, we'll focus on what we do know.

Is there going to be an updated snowfall map either at 11pm or 6am??

    From the last entry:

Folks: Keep the discussion focused on JUST the forecast, the current conditions, snow totals and questions relating to the storm. If you bring a political discussion in here, we will ban your IP* address. We cannot be in here policing 24/7, so we need you to police yourselves.

Also, please do not post anonymously. Sign with your first name and your town please. If you post these things, it will make it much easier for us to respond to you, and also it will keep the conversation focused.

We really need you to do this, because we are taxed at the moment. This is a very challenging storm. Myself, Bill and Jill are all here at the moment.

Matt: Bill, Jill and I are all in basic agreement on the current map. We will peruse the new model data and make a decision, but we will likely be keeping this map.

Also, to everyone who is annoyed with our forecast... the NWS downgraded the Winter Storm Warning in Delaware County and points south and west to an advisory and has also knocked back total snow accumulation in CNY. We've been seeing this since yesterday and we made the decision to start "low" and end lower....rather than many other forecasts that began very high and now have to backtrack. When we preach being cautious in snow forecasts, we mean it for a reason.

Matt in your post 3 is why WKTV is the (IMO) best weather team in CNY. You havent overhyped this storm to disapoint everyone, you gave us the info you knew at the time and that is all you can do. And I thank you for that. Now lets sit back and see what happens!

    Matt,

I just looked at the buoy data off of the carolina coast. It shows quite a pressure drop over the last four to five hours. Could this be the beginning of the secondary low forming

I just wanted to commend you guys for doing a great job. I know a lot of us would love to see a big snowfall. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's going to happen with this storm. Good for you for sticking to your guns and forecasting what you feel is right. Don't shoot the messengers everybody!! Keep up the good work WKTV!

so when these 2!!!!!; lows move up here right in the middle should get the dry slot and due to 2 lows you would think there'd be more moisture plus both lows will move from there current track a couple hundred miles

Posted December 15th at 10:21 PM

  19. Matt(Marcy):

THAT IS a couple hundred miles EAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted December 15th at 10:23 PM

  20. Paul (Utica):

I'm glad to see you are all working away on this one. It does keep changing and I'm sure you guys won't be getting much sleep in the next 36 hours or so as it develops over us. I know there is some uncertainty about quantity of precipitation on the backside of the storm, but do you have an estimate of when the precip (in whatever form) will be ending? Late Sunday? Early Monday? I know there were earlier thoughts of post-storm lake effect, that were then looking less likely, but an approximate idea of when this system should move out would be appreciated.
By the way, I had made a suggestion a couple of days ago about making snowfall prediction maps easier to find on the website, and for this storm everything is right there! Thanks for making it easy on us!

Last post for the night, I gotta get up at 7 then work from 11-11. First I think we need a moderator (but that is above my pay scale). Even if its just a few posters it gets rather annoying.

Second on the weather, snow is falling here in Chenango county. Secondly there has been some definate pressure drops off the coast, not sure what we would really need to start the Low out there but its worth noting. I still think that a snow of 5-10 with icing is pretty major this early in the season.

Great job guys and see ya in the morning!!!

Posted December 15th at 10:26 PM

  22. Matt Lanza:

Matt: Nope, with the two lows, we would be trapped between them and in a dry slot. I think our forecast confidence right now is average to slightly above average. Very high confidence now in a dry slot (lull in the sleet) tomorrow afternoon.

Ryan: I looked at pressure falls and the current surface pressures and I see nothing at the moment to get me excited. We'll keep watching though.

  23. mike m ( binghamton):

matt, can you explain why snowflakes are different sizes, i looked out side and i thought it was sleeting out the snowflakes were so small..is the snow going to be very grainy with this storm.

Posted December 15th at 10:29 PM

  24. Matt Lanza:

Paul: It looks like the snow will wind down late Sunday night and gradually taper off to scattered snow showers for Monday, eventually ending entirely by Monday evening. So there will be some breaks of sun on Monday and periods where it isn't snowing. Best chance is early in the day, with decreasing chances from morning onward. And you're welcome about making the site easier. We really want to continue cleaning things up. We'll do what we can!

period of heavy snow down here, quite windy. the new gfs keeps coastal alittle stroger and a tad further east, but it also still keeps primary into ohio and as rob said dry slot is still there, also it does not bring deformation zone as far south....

Posted December 15th at 10:55 PM

  42. Jones:

The colder solution of the latest GFS certainly doesn't surprise me. A stronger coastal low accomplishes this quite easily and given the strength of the baroclinic zone (temperatures in the 40s all the way to the NC/SC coast with water temperatures near 80) and the tremendous amount of diabatic heating associated with the convective precipitation in the Southeast. The previous run of the GFS was also trending colder. Obviously, the next step is to verify that the pressure falls are happening in the Southeast, if we see ~1005 mb somewhere in the Carolinas by 6z, I think confidence will be high enough to follow the GFS.

I agree on that.Primary low although on track seems to be not as intense.

Posted December 16th at 12:02 AM

  66. Rob(whitesboro):

When you really look at everything going on,there should be no way the (primary) storm could hold out. It's moving into much colder air as opposed to the coastal where there is just loads of dynamics and warm air to feed off of.Science would tell me that the coastal should just explode rapidly and take controll.

Posted December 16th at 12:11 AM

  67. mike m ( binghamton):

sleet mixed with a graupel/snow continues here.

Posted December 16th at 12:14 AM

  68. Mike(Leonardsville):

So it's entirly possible that the models were a dud completely on this storm and did not predict the cold air. So with the secondary low forming, is it more likely we stay snow or do we still have a lot of sleet?

Posted December 16th at 12:22 AM

  69. Anthony:

Rob, ....those were the points I was trying to make last night.......If you look at the winter storm radar on TWC website it almost appears as though the cold air is deepening down the spine of the applachains....thoughts??

Posted December 16th at 12:24 AM

  70. Jones:

Hopefully, this will address this issue Mike M is having in BGM. I produced a few plots of 750 mb temperature (as a first guess of where the warmest air is) and at the 6-hr forecast (1 am tonight), the GFS has the zero degree line extending just to the north the border between PA and NY. It is almost due west to east. At the 12-hr forecast (7 am this morning), this line actually moves southward east of BGM, but northward west of BGM, so it becomes oriented WNW to ESE. It's unfortunate that I don't have a way to show these images, but if the model is correct it would imply that the sleet/snow line may not move much further north initially, especially east of BGM as well as most of central NY.

Posted December 16th at 12:25 AM

  71. Matt Lanza:

Mike... we will change over to sleet...period. I'll put it to you this way...if it doesn't happen, I'd be surprised...very surprised. According to radar, I think the sleet line may already be approaching Norwich. No reports to back that up though.

Posted December 16th at 12:25 AM

  72. mike m ( binghamton):

sleet is trying to go over to snow, visibilites are lowing..it is a wierd type of precip...i think partially melted than refrozen snowflakes?? as the heavier precip moves back in we may turn to snow??? 17.4 degrees here currently.matt, is the secondary low looking stronger than models were saying?

Hey guys...time to showcase our new toys. This is the 3D radar product we have now, called X-Vision. I snapped this 5 minutes ago. Notice, you're looking from the ground up at the storm. See the orange showing up? It's east of Cortland through Chenango County....that's sleet. Now, if you go 20 miles south of there, we lose that, so I suspect that's why Mike has gone back to snow.

Posted December 16th at 12:48 AM

  96. mike m ( binghamton):

Rob, not sure if it is really snowingat state college, they have the tendacy to report snow when it is sleet...look at the radar they have heavy precip over them and yet visibilites are 2.5 miles.. at best that indicates snow/sleet mix.

Posted December 16th at 12:57 AM

  103. Mat Lanza:

Jones: Basically what you see in the graphic I posted above...the orange and red indicate higher reflectivity....meaning the radar is seeing "heavier" precipitation. In a summer event, this means heavy rain. But in winter, it means that the radar is seeing "bigger' precipitation...so rather than snowflakes, it's seeing the ice pellets (sleet) that send back a greater reflectivity to the radar than would a snowflake.

Posted December 16th at 12:57 AM

  104. Matt Lanza:

Mike M & Others...it's a generic color table..so it's not differentiating snow from rain or sleet. It's just the raw radar data.

  105. mike m ( binghamton):

o ok so blue was just lighter precip..gothca.

  106. humphr:

Matt - Given that it is a "snapshot" that you have posted in that link, I assume the full product shows some sort of legend or at least has some sort of explanation on the screen when you show it to your viewers? Otherwise, the presentation style is more than a little counter-intuitive. I believe the confusion among those of us who are accustomed to viewing radar images on a daily basis (and even those who don't) is that when we see an image like that, we associate green with rain, blue with snow, and orange/salmon with mixed precip. (I think it's even used as a test for color blindness when you grow up in Upstate NY! Hehehe, j/k.) So, no offense, but, to assume that one would automatically know that blue = light and green = moderate precipitation of identical water phase is, to say the least, folly. Hence, the need for a legend of some sort.

It's probably too late to make snowfall changes, but honestly, I would be upping things a bit because the real mixing isn't progged to start until after sunrise and we're already easily 3-6" in most areas north of Rt 20 and the precip keeps coming hard. I see nothing on radar right now that leads me to believe we'll change exclusively to sleet anytime soon. It's just that the front end of this storm is likely outperforming itself. With a surface temp of 12 degrees right now, snowfall ratios have to be at least 15 or even 20:1. Assume we get a total of 0.60" liquid. Right there is 6"+, so...all told, I think we're going to meet and possibly exceed snowfall forecasted totals right now.

Matt L, you said your looking for reports from anyone who is still up. I have 5" of accumulation in a 5 gal pail I am using for measurements. It has been all snow here (albeit light fine snow) since starting just before midnight. Wind keeps shifting around but very lightly. I would say between 5 to 10 MPH. Visability has not changed from my last report about 2 hrs ago at 100 to 200 ft. And temp on the old thermometer is now down to 16 from 22 but to these 52 yr old bones, it feels bitterly cold out there and quite crispy. People may be having periods of sleet or freezing rain around the state and maybe it is my location right next to the frozen lake, but it has been ALL snow here all night. Even though I am only 3 miles outside of Dolgeville and Mikes reports from there, when ever we get these potentials for "big" storms, I just get pummeled with snow over here. Hope this helps.

Also, I did cave in and update the snow map...through NOON Sunday...this does NOT include tomorrow night's snow, for reasons because it's almost like two storms. Click here for the update. I hate doing this because it feels like cheating. But our in-house radar-based snow estimates are over 7-8" in western Oneida County. Thruway corridor is getting pounded.

Frank..I'm putting Utica down for 5". I'd like to hear from someone else in the Thruway corridor right now. Mesoscale banding feature has really set up over Oneida/Onondaga Counties. Not sure if sleet is mixing there, but radar is not necessarily implying that, so snowfall could be significant in some of those area. Syracuse automated station is reporting blowing snow right now, but no precip. Somehow I don't buy that. If anyone from 'Cuse is reading, I'd like to hear from you too.

Thanks Matt and Mike for the positive comments and I am not trying not to go off topic with this comment but you guys might get a laugh out of this, but to live where I do ALL winter long as the ONLY resident on either side of the lake out of about 50 "seasonal" camps down here, always reminds me of the movie "The Shining" and the way the hotel gets cut off from the "outside" world during the snowstorm.
The same kind of happens to me here. My driveway is barely single lane winding between 100 ft tall pine trees and it is about 1000 almost straight uphill to Kyser Lake road and when it snows like it did during the Xmas 2002 and New Years day 2002 storms as well as the VDay storm of last year, my 5 Whippets and I are LITERALLY trapped down here because the snow drifts and since the driveway is so narrow, there is no where to plow the snow out of the driveway. But we always okay as I am well prepared for the siege including an ample supply of food and a back-up power generator.
Matt, you might remember I was the nut who risked life and limb to climb out onto the edge of the rocks overhanging the downside of the dam to take the digital photos for the station of the water cutting a brand new channel downriver and washing away the power plant on the day of the flood just a few hours after the Dolgeville resturant (D&R) washed over the dam. To this day I still can't afford the cost of the rip-rap material and heavy equipment to replace my dock and boat launch from that storm.
I swear, I have to be crazy to live here BUT you can't beat the warm summer July and August nights with low humidity and a gentle breeze blowing across the lake from the West through the open windows. :-)

Nice to know so many people up and interested in the weather in East Winfield area. We should be used to it! The wind has blown the snow all around, paths have disappeared. Sleeting. Visability a little better. Plows have been through 2-3 times in the last 3 hours. I heard them, because you couldn't tell looking at Route 20.

I havent had a chance to look at the models, ARE we going to get some good snow later today and tonight????

Matt in Clinton: Glad we weren't one of them...or at least when we realized we had a problem, we cut back on numbers.

Guys, I think the reason places are changing over so soon is because the speed of the storm has sped up considerably from what was originally forecasted. I honestly think the heavy snow (which looked like it would fall between 7 and Midnight) may now be pushed up to 2 and 8 PM. Jill and I are changing the snow map for the rest of the event, and going with 2-4" area-wide between Noon and 7 AM, with the majority falling through 5-6 PM. Lake effect will also be a factor and may contribute to higher amounts in the Syracuse area, western Oneida and the Tug Hill tonight after the bulk of the storm pases. New snow map will be up shortly.

Glad I canceled out my appointments for this weekend thanks to Matt L's comments posted on the blog a few days back. We may have not have gotten the 12 inchs as thought, but this storm is nothing to sneeze at when one is on the road, for sure.
--Pasted here is the comment that saved my clients some grief: Regarding Saturday night-Sunday night... this storm looks extremely significant. The biggest storm we've ever had before December 20th was in 1973, when 12.2" fell. Honestly, based on the latest model runs, we very well may obliterate that record, as well as make a run at some other December snow records. I'm not trying to overhype this...I understand this is a major weekend for shopping. But, there is nothing I see right now that would prevent us from seeing at least one foot of snow, likely more. We need to watch this closely. I would go ahead with travel cancellations this weekend if you are going places.
Posted 21 minutes ago by Matt Lanza. -- I emailed this to my clients that were coming in from Conn. and were going to get work done Saturday, along with some locals, and then they were going to finish up and return today, Sunday. I took Matt L's advice and resheduled them. This may have saved the people from Conn. some headaches, or even tragedy, because this wind, sleet, snow and icy mixture, which, in my opinion, may be just as bad, or worse, for driving than just plain snow when one needs to drive over 200 miles through it! Thanks Matt L. for getting out there to at least tell us it was going to be a bad storm - 12 inchs or not.

I think we are still getting sleet here or else very small flakes of snow.....I can still here the noise on the windows though. The wind really has died right down. I was out clearing the driveway and had stuff blowing in my face the whole time. Then (of course) when I finished, the wind seemed to completely stop. Despite the snow not materializing much so far.....it is definitely a good day to stay inside!

  344. Barb:

Barrett - it's NOT the snow you have to worry about. It's the wind causing drifts, white-outs and an icy glazing on the roads! Out in the country with open fields it's like a different world from Utica with street lights, etc. Worry about wind and visibility at night especially, and keep your speed down if you must go out.

Posted December 16th at 2:55 PM

  348. Jeff (Southern Hills):

LOL Hey sno, I am still here and I am glad I doubted just a bit. With 4 inches last night and now just a shade under 3 with heavy snow falling that makes 7 for the storm that was predicted to be 2-4. The snow came on much faster and sooner today than anyone expected. It has been snowing heavily here for almost 3 hours with no end in sight. There was what looked like a dry slot that has filled in now. Visibility at about 1/10th of a mile. Is the lake effect still an issue???? If we get that we will be approaching a foot for the storm.

Huge snow flakes..coming down quite heavy. Barrett--knowing what it is like north of Rome, you may have a tricky time coming home after midnight. Seems like it is touch and go with the lake effect then, and I don't know if we are going to get anything then. I would check to see if it is going to lighten up by then--if it is, drive slow and you should be OK. Wish the Bill's would act like they are playing in Buffalo!! What the heck is wrong with them...they have played in worse in Wilson Stadium (I know..I have sat through it!!). Is that mess coming this way?

I have to say, this is the kind of snow that I like the most. It looks nice coming down and it's not terrible driving either, at least when the roads are plowed. I didn't have any issues getting in to work this afternoon. Just take it a bit slower if you are driving out and about. You aren't invincible if you have 4 wheel drive.

I live on a state road and it is really in crumby condition. I guess when you have all the roads they have to plow I'm lucky it is what it is. Hoping the snow keeps up most of the night and have a few more inches by morning.

Paul: If the winds houl like they say they will, you'll end up with blizzard-like conditions, and schools don't like that. They also want to get to 2008 before using a day, so the supers are in a draw, seeming many districts already have shortened weeks.

I'm hoping the snow stays as hard as it is through 9am tomorrow. It'll give me some plowing to do, and I'd have the day off (cross' fingers)

Round two of this snow could be worse than the initial round we had late last night... Expect this to go all night, lightening up from time to time...2-4" on top of what you have now is possible, with locally higher amounts in the Tug and Western Oneida. This one is not done yet...

    - 17Z a change to IP until about 20Z

    - then a gradual tapering off of the SN after 6Z Mon
    - then the LES kicks in with ample synoptic moisture to work with but with a NW to at times a NNW flow will limit accumulations!!

looks like we may have two more weather events according to the GFS to deal with soon. Hard to believe same time line as this week. Thur/Fri and Sun/Mon again. It appears Thur/Fri may be a mess since temps are pretty high, but late weekend system may be very interesting if everything comes together. Posted December 16th at 6:38 PM

  460. Laura (Paris Hill):

Don't know what the valleys are like but have picked up six inches of snow since 2:30 PM. And it is still coming down. Way more snow/sleet then we got last night/this AM. If the winds pick back up it could be a mess.

Posted December 16th at 6:39 PM

  461. Bill Kardas:

One more thought before I get some dinner: in this type of setting, information becomes very congested and confusing. I'll try and clear things up with that map I made for tonight: 3"-6" of snow is possible for the remainder of the night...from the time I made that map (6pm) to tomorrow morning. Most of that will accumulate before midnight. This forecast is hard...I'm thinking that some of that should backfill with lake moisture playing a roll.

WOW!!! What a awesome day we have had here in Fly Creek.. We started up with snow around Midnight last night, then it changed over to sleet, and then at 430 this morning it was freezing raining, then it changed back to sleet, then to snow, then back to sleet, then back to snow... This morning, I didn't think we had much snow maybe 4 inches, but tonight, WOW, I can't believe how much we have.. We have about 10 inches.. Its going to be more also, its snowing like crazy out now.. The DOT here today have sucked totally doing their job, They have only plowed the roads onces today.. Can you believe that, and that was at 6 this morning... We have at least 6 inches in the road alone.. They really need to get their head out of their butts, and do some better work.. If there is school tomrorow, and the roads aren't plowed, boy will there be trouble to hit the fan.. Great Job WKTV keeping us updated with what is going on and what we should expect out of this storm.. Anyone here if we will be getting another next weekend, they said maybe on Christmas eve into Christmas day?? Trails open here on Wednesday if anyone is interested... Ill keep you all updated throughout tonight and into tomorrow morning with snow totals and everything... Have fun playing in the snow..

What a difference an hour makes! I was snowblowing about 7PM and the winds were calm...just a light snow falling. Then went out for a walk with the dog about an hour later. Blowing at about 10MPH with gusts 20-30MPH and moderate to heavy snow. Glad I got the driveway done early.

Oh by the way, we have about 12-14" of snowcover. Approximately 7" of that was from overnight and today. 2-3" of sleet/snow/ice mix and the rest the good stuff.

The barometer bottomed out at 29.1 at 6:30PM. Not sure how that centers the low, bu I know we were pretty close to the center here 20 mi south of Syracuse

The temperature dropped from 32F to 24 in the last hour. Those winds on the backside of the low are really ushering in the cold air.

It looks like it's shifting east, but shifting south down towards BGM and PA.

Plenty of snowing but not much blowing right now here, about 7 inches since 2 this afternoon when I last cleaned out the driveway. Showing no signs of stopping, especially on radar. BIG KUDOS to this blog and the W2 Crew, over 500 posts. If you would like to compare, that one at the tv station out in the bigger city 50 miles west of us has about 40 posts since last night, it bites. This is proven testament that this blog and the WKTV crew are the top of the line around here, noone even comes close. Great work everyone!

At this point it's hard to tell..this has been one heck of an afternoon...I hope it all continues though the night and into the day tomorrow with lots of wind. It will ensure the S-Day that all the kids want! If you're driving anywhere tonight be careful..i'll keep checking back!

NWS issued a short term forcast stating lake effect will cover the area and give 1-3" by 1AM. It does not look like they have issued an LES warning for Oneida county yet, and the Winter storm warning still is until only Noon.

snowing at a pretty good clip at the moment. additional 2-3 inches here since 4pm now the wind is picking up. Should make for white out conditions in some locations around

  528. Dan (Paris):

Rach, I don't know if this helps, but meteorologists describe a wind from wheres its from, not where it is headed. A north west wind is heading to the south east. If you knew that then I apologize, just trying to help with the confusion. Snowing and very windy up here near Paris Hill.

Posted December 16th at 9:25 PM

  529. Rach (NY Mills):

I actually think it's moving along with the LOW, then the LES will come into effect around 11 after or so when the real winds officially pick up on it. Currently the Winds are out of the West at 19mph.
An I'm about to leave to Albany :( doesn't look bad out towards that way, but that always could be wrong.

Dan: Hoping that it will stay like that up on the hills for the morning tomorrow..it's pretty nasty down here in the valley at the bottom of the hill too. We'll have to see what happens!

  536. mike m ( binghamton):

rach i agree, however LES is taking over across the finger lakes now on a WNW to NW flow( about 300 degrees?)jeff me and you both should get nailed overnight..of course i will probably see less than you, i would say 5-10 for you (locally 1 foot) with 3-8 for me. drifting snow becoming a real problem down here, drifts are upwards of 1 foot on sides of road.

Posted December 16th at 9:47 PM

  537. Allen (Sauquoit):

Do you guys have an idea where this LES will track? Are we likely to see any here in CNY?

Posted December 16th at 9:53 PM

  538. Becky (West Leyden):

Were getting a lot of drifting up here, at this time its snowing lightly. LES is showing on Superior, Huron and Georgian Bay. Huron has quite a bit SE of the Lake. Ontario should start as soon as the low moves a little more to the east.

Posted December 16th at 9:53 PM

Snow and windy conditions here. Radar seems to show steady snow for awhile in this area. Wish I had won that snowblower!

Heather, you mentioned 5S not plowed much?
Don't want to turn this weather blog into a state worker bashing, but seems terrible so far this year.
If we get snow at night, still on Rt. 12 at 7:30 when Im coming into Utica. Most roads around Utica are clear when Deerfield hill is terrible. Afternoon is usually pretty good, but state doesn't seem to touch the hill in the early morning. Maybe they should watch this site, thne they'll know when to expect snow

On the radar it looks like the band of snow is condensing and becoming much smaller.

Posted December 16th at 10:10 PM

  545. mike m ( binghamton):

i understand NWS has winter storm warnings on going for onondaga, madison and oneida, but perhaps they should change them to LES warnings and expand further south into cortland , chenango ,otsego and tompkins couties(for 6-12 additional inches), then put advisories up for broome, tioga(4-8"),chemung and susquehanna counties(2-6").

Posted December 16th at 10:11 PM

  546. Allen (Sauquoit):

Mike: These warnings should still be up in Oneida county right? I mean the wind is terrible here..and once these lake bands kick in it's going to get even worse..I agree you guys need something down there..it seems as you are going to get lots of snow too!

Posted December 16th at 10:13 PM

  547. mike m ( binghamton):

winds are strong and therefore should deliver snow showers far from lake shore. we could get some good connections with huron and georgian bay later. matt, bill what are your thoughts?

  548. Sarah (South Utica):

Very windy here. Is this wind going to keep up through the night?

Posted December 16th at 10:14 PM

  549. Paul (Utica):

Allen: Oneida county still has winter storm warning until noon, but no LES warning. Their short term forcasr as of an hour ago predicted 1-3" by 1AM. I think we'll exceed that without a problem.

Posted December 16th at 10:15 PM

  550. Allen (Sauquoit):

Sarah: Yes these strong winds should persist through tonight gusting strong..and into the day tomorrow..could be tricky travel in the morning..especially if you live on a hilltop. Matt, Bill, what are your thoughts about LES connections with Huron and Georgian Bay?

Posted December 16th at 10:17 PM

  551. Gordon (Northwestern):

Just got back from plowing the driveways again. We have now had 12.4" of snow for the storm as of 10 PM. Probably had a little more than that fall, but to be official you can only measure it ever 8 hours and the snow compact some during that time.

I can't answer about LES, but based on the latest data, the next 3-6 hours will be the busiest with a gradual decrease in coverage and intensity through tomorrow morning as the storm pulls away...taking some of the good LES conditions with it. There isn't a need for any LES advisories I don't think. BGM wisely kept the Winter Storm Warning in effect for the northern counties because of exactly what's been happening since this afternoon. They essentially verified their warnings because of that. I could see a short fused advisory maybe being issued for Cayuga, Oswego, Onondaga, N Oneida...but since there are already flags up for the winter storm...don't expect many/any changes. Again, I'm not dealing with the forecast.

As an aside, thanks to all for contributing to our coverage of this storm. The reports have been great. We apologize if we ignored a lot of questions, but you just have to realize it's not possible for us to keep up in these situations. But this has helped make our coverage of this storm as good as any of the other "big brother" markets in Upstate NY from Buffalo through Albany. We appreciate this!

    The snowblower contest states:

Only entries received by WKTV or postmarked on the day BEFORE the certified date of the two inch total will be eligible to win

Does that mean as an example, if on Dec 6th, I enter Dec 20th, it will not qualify because “entry was not received the day before (ie Dec 19th”.
Shouldn’t the rule be “must be received BY the day before…”
Theoretically, with your rule, I can only enter today for 2 inch snowfall tomorrow!!
