An October Winter Storm

Posted October 27th, 2008 by Matt Lanza. 319 comments

Let's try this again.

So we're on the brink of our first winter storm of the season. After our discussion on Friday, it's clear that scenario two won out. This means a lot of problems for us from a forecasting and impact standpoint. I'll get into the timeline and specifics in a bit. First, I want to focus on two areas where this forecast could get messed up.

Temperature

Right now, we're banking on the air being cold enough on the west side of the storm to change rain to snow from the hilltops on down tomorrow afternoon. If the storm track is further east than expected, the cold air arrives sooner and we change over to snow sooner...which could increase accumulation amounts. If the storm track is a little further west, we're looking at slightly warmer air and maybe a later changeover, thus less snowfall. So small changes in the overall weather map could make a major difference n what we actually see.

Precipitation

Simply put, if the zone of heaviest precipitation misses us a little to the east or west, well then we see less precipitation and less snow. But, if the zone of heaviest precipitation ends up over us, then we cool off more rapidly and rain changes to snow sooner and again, you get more snowfall.

Certainties

Here's what we do know. It's going to precipitate quite a bit tomorrow, with perhaps an additional 1-3" of "liquid" falling over our area. This is a major system to have on the heels of another one (Saturday's). It will be windy. Winds will increase 10-20 mph from the north tonight and become NNW 15-30 mph tomorrow, with higher gusts on hilltops. Someone is going to get a significant dose of snow for October. Whether it's the Adirondacks, the hilltops north of Utica or elsewhere, someone is going to get hit awfully hard by this, given how early in the year it is. Lake effect snow is going to be another beast entirely behind this storm and could be quite significant. There WILL be an elevation discrepancy during this event that may be even more drastic than we see in spring storms. Elevations above 1,000 feet are going to experience a drastically different series of events than areas below 1,000 feet. Looking for your elevation? As Mike S pointed out, Google maps terrain maps are great. Go to maps.google.com and click on "Terrain" at the top right of the map. You can zoom into your town and see the elevation contours, even down to your street. A big help.

There is a LOT of uncertainty regarding this storm even now. Why? Because there isn't much precedence for it. We simply don't have a record of many October snowstorms...and we don't have much to go off of here, so we are in uncharted territory...as this will be a stronger storm than some of the previous October events, but it will also track further west.

Let's do the timeline.

Tonight

Rain is already developing ahead of schedule. Temperatures have edged back into the 40s. Rain will continue periodically overnight. It's possible that some hilltops south and west of Utica begin mixing with some snow toward daybreak...with little to no accumulation.

Tuesday Morning

Rain will continue steadily at times. Rain will begin to mix with or even change over to snow south and west of Utica (S Onondaga/Madison/Chenango perhaps), primarily above 1,000 feet in elevation. Through Noon, that area of mixing should slowly slide eastward down Route 20 so that by Noon, it should be raining in most valleys and falling as mixed snow/rain above 1,000 feet in elevation...south of Rt 20. High Adirondack locations will be mostly/all snow by Midday. Some of the lower Adirondack valleys will stay rain though.

Tuesday Afternoon

Here's where the fun begins. Rain will changeover to snow as the precipitation begins to fall heavily at times after 1-2 PM. This will be mainly true on hilltops south and west of Utica, but as we go deeper into the afternoon, the change over may begin to occur in valleys southwest of Utica, as well as on hilltops in and around the Mohawk Valley....so that by evening, just about everyone in the area will have flipped over to snow. Accumulations by sunset will be on the order of an inch or so in and around the Mohawk Valley, where the snow is steadiest. On hilltops south of Utica, the Tug Hill and Adirondacks, 2-4" is expected by sunset.

Tuesday Night

Snow will fall heavily at times during the evening hours (before Midnight). Most of the accumulating snow will occur here. Snow will taper off in most places after Midnight, with the exception of western Oneida and perhaps the Tug Hill or hilltops southwest of Utica, depending on how the lake snows set up. Snow accumulation will occur more rapidly after dark as well and should begin accumulating on roadways and sidewalks as well. The lake effect will be addressed later.

Totals

When all is said and done (at least through Wednesday morning), this is what we expect:

As we note every season, we can't take responsibility for or explain anyone else's forecast, except maybe the National Weather Service's. This is our forecast based on the best information we have here. If you want to look elsewhere, again, we can't explain why they say what they do. This storm will be enough of a challenge that multiple places may have multiple interpretations of the same information and will be different. Again, these are our thoughts.

This is a very conservative forecast. There is definitely the potential for any of these amounts to be higher. But given that it's the first snow of the year, the ground is still warm, and there are still a lot of uncertainties in this forecast, I have purposely decided to keep these amounts lower than I otherwise would have gone. There can and will be adjustments made to this forecast on the fly, but there's the first real call.

Wind

Wind will be an issue. A number of factors will ultimately decide how serious the wind is: How much snow falls on trees, how many leaves are on the trees, how strong the winds are, etc. 30-40 mph wind gusts are possible on hilltops. There may be less wind in the colder air than further east of here. So even this may be a question mark. The good news is that the amount of downed trees and power outages will be mitigated by the fact that a lot of the leaves are gone. Saturday's wind event actually did us a lot of good by de-leafing a lot of the trees in our area. That makes a huge difference.

The bottom line. Stay tuned. We need your observations and reports, so please post them from all over the area, as it will be a big help to us trying to piece together how this thing is unfolding.

Ryan: I‘m not touching Wednesday until tomorrow. There will be snow around…I‘m just not sure how widespread it‘ll be.

Kelly: Don‘t be disappointed. Things could still change. Remember, this is just our initial call and as I said, there‘s a lot of variables in this storm…so lots to consider.

yee…haaaa.so glad i work from home running a day care. i can just watch the weather and cuddle with the children.
i live at the top of woods road just past hidden valley golf course…not having great luck with the elevation map (maybe i‘m just an idiot). i did zoom in as far as i could but the closest lines indicating elevation were over by postal road in oriskany and they said like 600’. i believe i may be a little higher?

  5. Ryan S. (Sauquoit):

Thanks Matt, just hoping for enough snow to make a good shoveling day :)

Posted October 27th at 9:07 PM

  6. Mike S (Port Leyden):

Parry K: That means you‘re in a flat area. The interval for the lines is something like 75’ zoomed in all the way. If the closest is 600’, then you‘re within 600-675.

Hard to say. I like what Matt has right now for tomorrow. If you watch the video instead of North Country / South he has >1000’ and <1000’. For going out until Wednesday, lake effect is a possibility, but I‘m not totally sure on the wind direction or if it‘ll even make it that far from the lake. At the end of the week I‘ll go with 4-8” for you.

Just took a look at the latest NAM model for 0z and it is bringing the low right on the NY/Mass border and puts quite a bit of precip over cny. would this gives us more snow if this model is correct?

BRING IT ON!!!! I hope we get several inches here in New Hartford. I love it!!!!

  17. Rob (Whitesboro):

Looks like the NAM came down in precip a bit(which was rediculous anyways). The only other change I can see is that it‘s not showing any strong bands any more coming off the lake like in previous runs.

im kinda excited for an early snow system :)

Posted October 27th at 10:38 PM

  19. Rob (Whitesboro):

Well I did some comparing and it seems theres a more northerly componet to the wind. This wouldn‘t shut off the lake effect by any means but it would shift it further SW a bit resulting in a weaker fetch thus less intense than it could be.

I did a little bit of research and the earliest significant October snowfall in upstate New York that I could find was early October 1987. This was a big event for eastern New York espeacially on the hilltops. 43 and steadilly dropping here.

  31. Rob (Whitesboro):

Becky I never got one either.I think Matt can register you right from WKTV.The trend on the final model runs were to bring the storm a little more to the east.Synoptically this could bring in the colder air a little bit sooner for some.As far as lake effect…the flow would be 290/300 behind the storm.A 300 flow wouldn‘t do our immediate area much good. You can still get a decent band on a 290 flow so we‘ll see what happens. My total snowfall guess for Utica is 8.0” by Thursday morning

Posted October 28th at 12:10 AM

  32. Becky (West Leyden):

Thanks rob: A 290 I can deal with. Its the 270 to 280 that wouldn‘t be good this early. (power would be out for days)

If anyone is interested NWS Buffalo as a database for the last 13 years up on there website. It only covers areas Buffalo is responsible for so the Mohawk Valley is not listed….....However, if you want to see the areas east of the lake….. it is still interesting.

  36. Piseco Lake:

I left Raquette Lake at 11:15 p.m. tonight – 37 degrees and light rain. The rain began to mix with snow at Blue Mountain Lake. Here in Piseco it‘s currenlty 36 degrees with a bit of snow mixing in with the rain. No accumulation yet.

Posted October 28th at 12:48 AM

  37. Michael- (Dolgeville):

39.2 degrees with light rain. Areas in Schoharie county are reporting snow and it is starting to stick at around 2000ft.

Posted October 28th at 12:49 AM

  38. Rob (Whitesboro):

40.3 here with light rain.Dew is at 35.

Posted October 28th at 12:54 AM

  39. Matt Lanza (Utica):

Rob: Based on what I looked at this afternoon, 1000-850 mb thicknesses dipped to about 1285 or so…which is well within range for snow at all levels, by 8 PM tomorrow. The 00Z NAM has them at 1295, which should be snow at all levels. But it‘s a mix up to about 6 or 7 PM.

I may be on my own with this one, but I am going to stick to my guns and not call for more than 4” in the Valley by Wednesday morning. I just briefly looked at NWS‘s point and click forecast for the area and I spit my water out…we‘re completely different from them.

This is the most challenging forecast I‘ve had to wrangle with since December 2007. With elevation events, there is always a major bust potential. This will be a big one for folks high up for sure…it just may not be a big one for folks in the Valley. We‘ll see what happens.

Posted October 28th at 12:55 AM

  40. Becky (West Leyden):

Smitty: I can‘t speak for Matt. The upcoming snowstorm has a lot of variables that have been hard to nail down….. the models have been all over the place….. The data has been and is still changing. The next few days are going to be very difficult to forecast. .....Therefore, the best advice I can give is look at the accumulation map…..find your location….That should give you an idea what your going to get.
    .
I‘m not speaking for WKTV....That said…....Everyone should remember WKTV can’t give an individual forecast for everyone’s front yard. I know last year they had the policy of no individual forecast. I suppose it will be the same this year. Anyone who wants an individual forecast can sign up for the weather e-mails….. These e-mails can be tailored to your area.

  42. Matt Lanza (Utica):

Folks one thing I would ask with observations (if you can) is to post your elevation, as that is going to make all the difference in the world. I truly think this is one of those storms where someone at 1,500’ could get a foot of snow, while someone at 800 feet gets 3”. It‘s going to be that kind of storm, so the sooner we know where the snow levels are, the faster we can react forecast-wise. We really appreciate the invaluable observations you provide us with.

Interesting to note that AVP (Scranton, PA) has turned over to snow. They‘ve had precipitation since early last evening and are not terribly high in elevation at 930’ – so it goes to show what dynamic cooling will do given time. We still expect a slow transition to wet snow through the morning on the hilltops and by later this afternoon in the lower spots in and around the Mohawk Valley.

  62. Adam Musyt:

    Trista,

Thanks for the report. I still like the call of 3-7 for now as it does look like the snow will pack as it falls (that will be especially true as long as temps are above freezing) but 6” of glop can be worse than 12” of your garden-variety snowfall.

It‘s not entirely out of the realm of possibility for the higher terrain to overperform our call but we‘re not going to pull the trigger on that unless or until many spots dip below the freezing mark.

Folks, Thanks for all of the reports. They are VERY helpful in the mornings.

It‘s been helter-skelter here in Deerfield. We had a changeover to snow and then when the precipitation lightened up a bit we went back to rain. Now we are back to a light rain/snow mix. Officially in Rome at Griffiss the temperature is still 40 degrees so it‘s going to take some time for that snow to work its way down to the valley floor. No doubt much of Otsego and Chenango Counties will be tricky this morning. Travelers beware!

I still like our call for now. Keep in mind that it has been snowing at Mt. Pocono since before 11:00 last night. And that is at 2100 ft. The vast majority of the area isn‘t quite that high in eevation – but some spots are close. So I still like our call for now. But definitely keep an eye on the upper end of that range if temps dip below freezing before, say, 1 or 2:00.

Hey, Matt. Quick question. It seems as if there is a good deal of above normal temps. building in the midwest right now and they look to stay that way for ayt least the next 7 days or so. Is there a chance that that slides this way and causes some flooding for the places that are going to receive the 6-12+ inches with this system or are we going to moderate to normal for late Oct/early Nov. resulting in a slow melt? It just seems that when above normal temps build in that region, they always seem to slide this way as well. Thanks! Good luck in the weather room tonight!

Posted October 28th at 2:41 PM

  154. Matt Lanza (Utica):

Gary: I‘m not too worried about much flooding right now, as streams are pretty close to normal for this time of year I believe. I think we‘ll see some significant rises, even by Friday as most of the snow will melt by then. But…certainly (at this point) nothing I‘m fearful of.

But yet in New Hartford it is raining? how is this so? can we expect a lot of snow? I thinks someone should try concentrating on this area because the weather reports for elevation and such do not add up for this area.

Posted October 28th at 2:54 PM

  160. Matt Lanza (Utica):

Snowwy: I‘ll be honest…there is no rhyme or reason to how things are behaving. We‘re seeing snow levels plummet now everywhere, so everyone should see a changeover. Elevations above 1000 feet south and east of Utica have been snow today….north and west have not. Why? Areas south and east are closer to the core of the storm. So Litchfield will see it before NH will.

Ryan: We‘re seeing banding begin…which means the snow is going to fall heavily in spots…not so heavy in other spots. The general trend will be for things to settle back a bit after 8-11 PM. So the next 2-4 hours will likely be the worst.

Ryan: when the sun goes down. the snow will be able to stick a lot better. There is a lot of banding in the storm…. so if you get under one of these band…the snow could intensity quite a bit.

  285. Larry - from Military Road Salisbury:

Update – Conditions at my location at this time:

    Elevation: 1020’.
Sky: Snow with light rain mix.
    Temperature: 32.5 degrees.
    Barometer: 29.31” S.
    Wind: WNW @ 7 – 16 mph (G-21mph)
    Precipitation: S – .4”.
    Visibility: .25 – .45 miles.

Roads have snow sticking in this area now creating slush and the plows are out.

  286. Jeff (Port Leyden):

Still snowing moderately here and about 2 inches on the ground. 32 degrees.

  287. Matt Lanza (Utica):

Sheesh, even the 1-3” for the Valley might have been generous. Hilltops continue to get walloped. I would advise not travelling anywhere south of Utica tonight at all.

  288. Rob (Whitesboro):

Yeah I‘m rather surprised The valley didn‘t at least get the grass covered yet.I‘m hoping for that 290 flow tomorrow cause that might be our only hope.Impressive totals in the Catskills from 12-16”.And that was 2 hours or so ago!

Portions of State Route 5 in Madison County are now closed due to multiple tractor trailers off the road. DOT trying to clear the road. 5 mile traffic backup!

Snow covering the ground here and still snowing very windy also

  292. Jimmy (New Hartford):

A thin coating of slush here, light coat of green on the grass. At my house our elevation is 700 feet. 50 ft. higher up higby hill you can‘t see the grass and they have about an inch. 100 feet up 800-850 feet higher at Perry Jr. high school you cant see the grass and the road is covered with .5 to 1 inch of slippery slush. 25-50 feet down my street there is zero snow on the grass. That really shows what a small change in elevation can mean. Here it is currently 34 degrees and lightly snowing wih gusty conditions that I would estimate at 5-20 mph. Will post more later.

  294. Andy (Forestport):

    Matt

does this count towards the 8 inches of snow rule in November?

Posted October 28th at 7:08 PM

  295. Jeff (Port Leyden):

Matt or somebody is this still considered a nor easter or is this lake effect were getting now? because it looks like the storm is still there on radar, but also looks like it‘s comeing in off the lakes.

  296. Bill (Exeter Center):

8+ inches and still coming down. Saw a few accidents on Rt. 205 between Hartwick and Rt. 80. One vehicle was on its roof. Very nasty traveling.

  297. Mike S (Port Leyden):

It‘s still a Nor’ Easter, but the lake is helping along with precip, making it a lake enhanced nor’ easter.

  298. Jeff (Port Leyden):

    Thanks Mike. I appreciate that.

Posted October 28th at 7:15 PM

  299. Becky (West Leyden):

Jeff: You‘re seeing both. The Nor‘easter is still moving north. and the wraparound of the winds a causing the Lake to fire up

    Thanks Becky.

Just drove past The Weather Channel‘s van up at the WKTV parking lot, looks like Tetiana Anderson was a little chilly when she was making her report. I didn‘t see the entries here saying they were there, but I recognized the evergreen trees across the road in the report I saw on TWC, so I took a drive over.

Kim, drive up towards barneveld on 365, about 2 miles out of HP theres snow sticking to the ground, were only at dusting status. Its really struggling, Im baffled by this.

Matt, how is it that the storm is wrapping cold air in and yet everyone on the northwest corner of this storm is struggling to get snow?

Matt: The snowfall rates should start falling off in a few hours. The valley might not get much more than they aready have.

  312. Laura (Paris Hill):

Well, it‘s still snowing here. Sounds like we night get walloped by morning? New warning for our area. Winds are are gusting 20+ MPH. Why is the north country still green while we are getting blasted??
