Another wintry blast is slated to arrive in CNY over the next 24 hours. This evening on the weather map, an arctic cold front is situated from Georgian Bay, back across Central Michigan and into
Temperatures through Thursday morning will likely top out in the upper 20's to lower 30's. As the cold front crosses the local area, snow squalls are likely to develop. Some brief whiteouts are possible - and roadways will likely become slippery as winds gust to 25-30 miles per hour. The best chance for this burst of snow will be between 9 AM and 3 PM. Accumulations are expected to average about 2"-4". Higher amounts are possible closer to the lake shore, with lesser amounts the further east you travel away from the city of
As the front pushes to the east, temperatures will plummet into the teens by around sunset. With 850 mb temperatures dropping to around minus 24 by early Friday, surface temperatures are expected to be only in the single digits Friday morning and highs will struggle to reach the teens. The mercury will fall below zero on Friday Night, and probably for Saturday Night as well. If you are going to be spending an extended amount of time outdoors over the next few days you'll want to be sure to dress in layers. Wind chill indices will be as low as minus 15. Old Man Winter is back!
The next large scale storm looks to miss CNY well to the south, bringing significant snow to (of all places)

Nick(West Winfield):
Adam,
Is there any possibility that it will snow tonight? If so could that up the snow amounts?Posted January 28th at 6:51 AM
-
Bill Kardas (WKTV):
Nick,
With such a cold airmass arriving tonight, there are big questions as to how far inland that band will extend. In our experience, once temperatures fall into the single digits, the airmass becomes too dry to maintain heavy snow this far inland.
Still, accumulating snow looks to be a good bet down in your area tonight (perhaps an additional 1-3” tonight on top of the 2-4” today). Our attention today will be focused on that snow squall that will move through early this afternoon.

Art- the calm before the storm
Justin- We do expect to see some lake effect, but with winds shifting all over the place it’s difficult to say how much snow makes it beyond the Tug Hill. Most of the lake effect that falls today will be in Lewis County before it shifts south through the valley as we head into the evening. With a moving band, it will be difficult to pick up more than a couple of inches.

The funny thing was that the snow was rather fine in it’s quality, but falling at a pretty good intensity which I think made the roads kind of glazed. Jill, does the fine nature of the snow have something to do with the cold temperatures, according to my care it was about 8 degrees out that way at the time. By the way, it was still snowing just about the whole way, same kind of snow, so if you are thinking of heading to Syracuse then take it easy.

Just about an inch of very fine and slippery snow from last nights little squall line. Very interesting at best, travelled to Norwich they had clear skies, on the way home it was clear till about 1 mile north of the Village of Sherburne and then it was like someone flipped the switch. I live about 3.5 miles north of the village and by the time I got to the end of my road even State Hwy 12 was snowcovered.
Also very bitter this morning, down to -15, with the current temperature still at -8!

I was nine years old during the blizzard of 66. I remember the snowbanks, the three or four days of no school in a row, the skidoo snowmobiles as the only transportations, and the very large system of tunnels we built as snow forts during the four days off from school. HP hit -19 this morning…....

I just glanced at the GFS through hour 384 (day 16) and at least three major storms miss us, all of them out to sea. What an unbelievable winter for the lack of snow…....

Low here this morning was -18. I looked back over my records, and in the last 25 years I could only find 2 that had less snow than this year, as of this date. They were 94-95, and 99-00.

Art, I remember the blizzard of 66, we were shoveling out the driveway- no snowblower back then- every couple hours. ad to shovel snow up on the bank, then my brother would shovel it back further. Could hardly reach the top of the bank on the first shovel. That was uphere in Forestport.

It took to just now to hit zero degrees here. I bet last night would have been even much colder if the winds were calm. That was a brutal airmass. Over 6” of snow now in Virginia Beach. The GFS bombs the same areas late next week.

Rob: Some of the GFS ensembles take the storm up the cost for next weekend, we can only hope!

randy Vitullo :
Rob, the GFS basically show that area getting for the next 3 storms. Not good for us. Hopefully, the GFS will be wrong. Of course, that would result in a move to the west by the storms giving us the dreaded western runner… So it continues, out to sea, western runner, out to sea, western runner, out to sea…......

It’s possible that this storm does come up the coast. The high pressure was too much for this storm to push any farther north. The barometer at RME was 1030mb this morning. It looks much weaker for next weekend.

After the snow the other day, seasonal total is up to 103.025. The snowmoble trails around my place look to have a fair to good base; snow tomorrow should get them into very good shape.

Yeah, this definitely looks like a Tug event. It’s still possible we see a few inches Monday morning. It only got up to 5 degrees here today. Even colder than Saranac Lake!

Are people saying OUT TO SEA again? LOL If it were possible, I’d say the Lake Effect will start going OUT TO SEA. I can’t recall being Late January, Early February with so little snow on the ground. Can see grass in most places. Crazy!!!!

Jill Reale (Utica):
Lake effect snow watch has been issued for Lewis County, primarily the Tug Hill for tomorrow. It will start with a westerly wind (southern Lewis) then the wind is going to turn SW out ahead of a weak cold front, so the band will lift North.
